GCs try to backpedal on negotiations not TCs

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

GCs try to backpedal on negotiations not TCs

Postby Acikgoz » Mon May 03, 2010 8:18 pm

Talks to reunify divided Cyprus will not start from scratch after a hard-liner won a Turkish Cypriot leadership election last month, a U.N. envoy said Monday.

Dervis Eroglu, who was elected president of the breakaway Turkish Cypriot north, met with U.N. envoy Alexander Downer for the first time since the April 18 vote.

Downer said Eroglu agreed to build on progress his leftist predecessor Mehmet Ali Talat made after 19 months of negotiations with Greek Cypriot President Dimitris Christofias.

--------------

House President Marios Garoyian said, "the good will and flexibility of our side have not met the relevant response by the Turkish side", since Turkey insists on a confederal solution and is pursuing a solution of two states. At the same time, he added, as it has been proven by facts, the Turkish Cypriot community is playing no decisive role in the negotiations because it is Ankara that determines the Turkish policy and strategy on Cyprus, without taking into consideration the real interests of the Turkish Cypriots.

The House President warned that the direct talks are at a critical hub and if the Turkish side does not abandon its intransigence the direct talks will be led to further degeneration. In this case, the UN and the international community will register yet another failure "

How do you see backpeddling from the GC side??? He was just stating facts as the situation is. Please tell us what he said was in error, because from where I'm standing you are propoganderising again.

I had you down as one of the more intelligent ones too!

Little toung in cheek the post I know.

Main point I wanted to put across was that Eroglu has not many places to go on the Cyprus issue. As many a politician, he promises everything to everyone, but delivering it is not always feasible. TCs "in general" knew this going into the elections, bigger issue was one of desire for more open channels of communication with populous as to what was being discussed and what compromises were being considered.
Re GC House President, I felt his comments were aimed at setting the stage for a withdrawal rather than declaring a withdrawal. Just wanted to raise the subject that the actions of the key players are being closely followed.
Politicians are notorious liars, and talk absolute rubbish most of the time. It is for the mere sincere mortals to keep them on the straight and narrow - as we must for all those that seek to make hay at the expense of the other side.

I don't get it. Eroglu won the vote because Talat failed to make progress on the negotiating table... so the people, desperate for a solution decided to replace him with Eroglu. How can they believe a hardliner like Eroglu would produce a solution? Backward progress is certain.
I am inclined to accept your remark as true:

Maybe they realized how stupid they were to accept these bogus “negotiations” in the first place!

About time too...
