Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot workers celebrate Mayday together. What a pity that solidarity was destroyed.

Even so, that sense of solidarity between the communities that once at least existed in the trade union movement and the political left, even if nowhere else, has been destroyed ... probably for good.

Halil, could you tell us what the banners say please?

I can only make out "Kibris" (Cyprus).

Cheers

The slogans that I can see concerning Cyprus are:

Cyprus cannot be a NATO base.

Peace in Cyprus cannot be hindered.

Workers of Turkey! Support peace in Cyprus.

Halil, in a way the pictures you have posted show what I am getting at. They show Turkish Cypriots demonstrating independently of Greek Cypriots. My picture at the beginning of the thread shows both communities celebrating Mayday jointly.

It was Akel's support for enosis that destroyed the brotherhood of the unions in the 50s and the 60s.

You are right. The tide of Enosis was so strong that AKEL probably felt that it had no choice but to go along with it. Whatever the reason, it is a pity that this one area in which there was a tradition of intercommunal solidarity was split apart along ethnic lines.

Slightly off thread but a more literal trip down memory lane from the Cyprus Mail: -

Image

TWENTY years ago I went on a UN-conducted tour of the Nicosia Buffer Zone: access to such usually forbidden no-man’s land, the livid scar at the heart of the Cyprus conflict, was a profound and emotional experience for a young journalist…….
