Against the law ????

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

Against the law ????

Postby miltiades » Sun May 02, 2010 5:08 am

I was flabergusted to say the least on witnessing an act of sheer" legal"
lunacy of the highest order I just could not remain silent and I launched a verbal attack on the instrument of the law in the process of issuing a penalty ticket to a vegetable seller in a Limassol Bazaraki !!!
The grotesque dated Arab orientated ( apologies to Arabs) law that determines that an EU citizen can not remain open for business on MAY THE 1st !!! How loudicrous and thouroughlely shameful law , if indeed such law was enacted would be illegal surely under EU legislature.
In all of Europe a trader can trade 365 days a year and here we are "pretending " to be in Europe and have the bloody stupidity to demand that a RoC citizen can not sell Aggouria on fricking MAY THE 1ST!!
I took the policemans details as well as the " offenders" and challenged the policeman to proceed with this European illegal act and asked the Aggouropolis to refuse the fine and challenge in court.
I offered the policeman an aggouri with a suitable suggestion as to its use .

ps. I have put this thread in the Cyprus problem area because it is a Cyprus problem , a problem with stupidity .

When in Rome, my dear Miltiades, when in Rome. This is not the Cypriot way of doing things.

Yianni, stop being so bloody minded. It wasn't that long ago when it was forbidden to open on Sundays in the UK.

You couldn't sell washing powder on sundays.

And you couldn't sell fish, from a chippie at that, at certain times.

Yes all this in the 300 year old civilised EU nation we call the UK.

So what if he wasn't allowed to open on the 1st May, it is the nation law and the EU can do jack shit.

Oh and let me also remind you, also in the UK, at Easter time that the pubs and clubs had to close early on Easter Thursday, Fri and Sat, so please lighten up.

Enjoy your lunch today, make the most of your short trip and relax man, you are in Cyprus

Militiades,
It is not against EU law to trade or conduct any other business on 1st May. If there is any restriction on trading then it has absolutely nothing to do with EU law. If somebody has told you that it is, they're either in error or taking the piss: either way they have misled you.

Isn't it against the law to mow your lawn on a Sunday in Germany ... or hang out washing on a line?

Isn't it against the law in the UK for retailers (with certain specified exceptions e.g. newsagents) to open for business before 11 a.m. on Sundays?

I never said that it was against EU law to trade on Bank holidays !!!
What I said is that the restrictions and fines imposed by the RoC on traders wishing to remain open on "bank holidays" is against EU laws .

The guy who posted that I should just remain indifferent to such nonsense like fining traders for trading on Mayday is clearly missing the point here.
It is people such as I who force the authorities to review "laws" that are absolutely stupid. Anyway I'm not the type to just ignore stupidity when its staring me in the face as this case was.
