Cypriot Nationalism can it exist now?

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

I am not being sarcastic, I truly want to know...

It evolves from love for your parents/carers! :D

Still confused as ever, but eager to learn, young shah! That's what I like about you.

My parents are absolutely amazing, I was never a nationalist and never will be. I find it very backward.

I think you have to distinguish between people who were loved and raised by nationalist people and people who were loved and raised by normal people, I can see why that might confuse some people.

Still does not answer my question dear Oracle, just says a lot about how you might have been raised ;)

I don't think you quite understood. You seem to think it evolves from something you are brainwashed with. Instead it is a natural consequence of feeling love for those who protect you. Subtle difference. Bit difficult for most Turks, I know. :D

Come on Oracle, you know that makes no sense.

There is a giant amount of distance between the love for your relatives/friends, to loving an identity that is imposed on you from the day you are born, without never even thinking about the reason behind it.

If people don't raise you to love this identity, there is no reason for you to fanatically defend it, which is nationalism really, it is fanaticism. Equally lacking rationality and purely rooted down to some ancient animal instinct, which has been very well manipulated by the leaders to be for centuries.

It takes a lot of objective criticism to over come, not sure if that goes down well with you

But you are living in a foreign country now?

Perfectly in line with my view, nationalism just makes no sense

Specially in Cyprus, considering it was what got us in this mess in the first place, how can people still think that what we need, to get us out of this mess, is more nationalism?!

Anyways visit Lefke too Bir, i'll serve you a cold drink :)

There are different types of nationalism...

True, some nationalisms have caused great human suffering...

But ultimately nationalism is a strong identification of society and the state.

Beyond that it becomes nebulous....

Some believe it is the conviction that one ethnic group has a right to statehood, or that citizenship in a state should be limited to one ethnic group. Others believe it involves committing genocide in order to create an ethnically homogenous society.

I on the other hand lend support to a Liberal or Civic nationalism where citizens are encouraged regardless of their 28 origins and three languages, colour of their skin, religion to identify and take ownership of the same state. I look to Canada, Belgium and Switzerland for inspiration, where citizens are happier than Cyprus.

Nationalism might have been our saviour had we chosen Cypriot nationalism back in the 50s...Now it is too late...It has become a dirty word in too many Cypriots minds...And justifiably so...

Lefke has a special place in my heart..My paternal grandfather used to live there...I visited often as a child...Perhaps your parents knew him...he was a tatlici (sweetmaker)...Ali Ahmet Hoca(aka Kenken)... :?:

Why not ask the Ata of the Turks?

I'm not being sarcastic, my answer is as genuinely put as the question...

You see no posts that say free Cyprus but with a slight guarantee just in case our GC cousins decide to rip up the agreement and join with Greece?
I've seen a few those around. Look more carefully.
