I was in the Bank of Cyprus last year when a couple came in and tried to change some Scottish money...

They were happy to change it but offered less than the standard £/€ rate which upset them somewhat...

The couple had a big row about it and claimed that the Co-Op offered the same rate for Scottish currency but the BoC wouldn't budge on it.

Why they didn't just go to the Go-op which is about twenty yards away isn't clear tho...

Palio - they differ in design. English currency accepted in Scotland. You do sometimes get the odd shopkeeper give a funny look when confronted with Scottish notes. I believe they can refuse to take them. I will look it up for you.

Here you go, from the Bank of England website:

Are Scottish & Northern Irish notes legal tender?
In short ‘No’ these notes are not legal tender; only Bank of England notes are legal tender but only in England and Wales.
The term legal tender does not in itself govern the acceptability of banknotes in transactions. Whether or not notes have legal tender status, their acceptability as a means of payment is essentially a matter for agreement between the parties involved. Legal tender has a very narrow technical meaning in relation to the settlement of debt. If a debtor pays in legal tender the exact amount he owes under the terms of a contract, he has good defence in law if he is subsequently sued for non-payment of the debt. In ordinary everyday transactions, the term ‘legal tender’ has very little practical application.
