Paphos airport may close in winter

Postby paliometoxo » Fri Apr 30, 2010 11:25 pm

NICOSIA - Paphos International Airport operation during winter months will depend on air traffic at the airport, Minister of Communications and Works Erato Kozakou-Marcoullis has said during a visit to the Airport.

Marcoullis was invited to comment on reports that the airport managing company intends suspend the operation of Paphos Airport during winter season.

Minister said that the whole matter would be examined ''always within the international regulations framework”, noting that Cyprus is a small country and does not have many airports, while Paphos airport is an auxiliary airport for Cyprus.

On his part, Hermes Airports Chairman Nicos Shacolas said that the issue of closing the Airport during the winter months is an issue to be considered depending on the conditions in October - November, noting that the managing company will act in the best interest of the country.

Shacolas also said that Cyprus airports ranked first worldwide in an international competition regarding the services offered by international airports, which was completed yesterday, followed by the airports of Sydney and Frankfurt.

Minister of Communications attended a meeting with all the involved departments and services of the Paphos airport while after the meetings.

Marcoullis also said she was briefed on some problems faced by the Paphos airport, which she would examine with the competent departments of the Ministry and the managing company, the representatives of which she met during her visit to the airport.

This is not good news. I mean we'll have all the dodgy Paphians and Peyians flying in to LCA. ..... oh of course build a new and much enlarged LCA and make full and profitable use of it, and close down PFO for half the year.

These Shagolas are a crafty lot.

There is no chance of Pafos Airport closing - there is still strong demand for its use and should it close the tourist market would be hit badly - something the Government would not allow.

I also assume the cost of paying off workers and having to fund a skeleton maintenance team would far outweigh any operational losses that might be incurred during the winter.

If they closed Paphos presumably we wouldn't get many flights in as aircraft need an "alternative" to land at if there's any problems with the original destination. Without this, nobody would be coming to LCA ??
