Spot on Nigey boy!

But if Paphos wasn't available as an Alternate, then they would just nominate Beirut or Akrotiri(if available?)!

But you only need an Alternate when weather is below minimas!

Marcoullis was invited to comment on reports that the airport managing company intends suspend the operation of Paphos Airport during winter season.

Minister said that the whole matter would be examined ''always within the international regulations framework”, noting that Cyprus is a small country and does not have many airports, while Paphos airport is an auxiliary airport for Cyprus.

On his part, Hermes Airports Chairman Nicos Shacolas said that the issue of closing the Airport during the winter months is an issue to be considered depending on the conditions in October - November, noting that the managing company will act in the best interest of the country.

Shacolas also said that Cyprus airports ranked first worldwide in an international competition regarding the services offered by international airports, which was completed yesterday, followed by the airports of Sydney and Frankfurt.

Minister of Communications attended a meeting with all the involved departments and services of the Paphos airport while after the meetings.

Marcoullis also said she was briefed on some problems faced by the Paphos airport, which she would examine with the competent departments of the Ministry and the managing company, the representatives of which she met during her visit to the airport.

they should have put down their airport taxes then maybe the hotels and the whole tourism industry would have a bigger turnover for this year :) easy solutions :) when the solutions these very educated people came up with were to fire people and to half salaries.

I also assume the cost of paying off workers and having to fund a skeleton maintenance team would far outweigh any operational losses that might be incurred during the winter.

Maybe because of the non appearance of tourists there will not be the demand for the airport to remain open at night ?

further to my last post ----from todays Sunday Mail........

PAPHOS Airport won’t be closing ‘even for a day’, Communications Minister Erato Kozakou Marcoullis said yesterday, adding that the whole furore over such a possibility was down to a misunderstanding.

“I feel there was a big misunderstanding and so I will take this opportunity to state publicly to all the media representatives and not only that the Cyprus Republic will never accept Paphos Airport’s closure, even for one day,” said the minister.

She was commenting on recent reports that the airport was struggling financially, which could lead to it being closed down at nighttimes over the winter.

“The ministry is making huge efforts to increase flights towards Paphos, so that tourism in the district can increase,” said Marcoullis. “I assure you that I will personally – along with the Commerce Minister - look into the possibility of attracting more tourists from third and other countries to Paphos.”

Furthermore, the minister added that she had so far received no official request to close the airport down.

Marcoullis’ statements were welcomed by Paphos Mayor Savvas Vergas, who underlined the significance of the airport’s operation
