Is Binding Arbitration Suited for Cyprob?

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

Postby turkkan » Thu May 06, 2010 1:32 am

As I posted earlier, the main obstacle is convincing Turkey to participate in the binding arbitration process. If yes, well, we have an open & shut case. Do you think Turkey would accept the invitation? We don't really know... why don't we ask our fellow TCs? Are they willing to take the plunge?

George, im not sure if your joking or how serious you are, but do you seriously beleive that after spending billions in the north, turkey and us TC;s are going to accept binding arbitration or any sort of crap that will not be in our favour? And do you also expect to 'trick' turkey into this somehow? We (TC's) are possibly in our strongest position now than we have ever been in the past 36 years or 47 if you start counting from 63. It is clear to the international community that their will be no solution agreed by both communities, no one seems to be particularly surprised or angry about it, talk about direct trade has become acceptable even if it may not go through, the border have been opened and any talk of turkey entering the EU has been put aside for at least twenty years (and dont flatter yourself by thinking thats because of Cyprus). Aside form a few cosmetic gestures and PR on the diplomatic field there is nothing that can be expected from turkey in the near future. Not until the time comes in the very distant future where turkey is about to get into the EU and the only thing stopping it is Cyprus. Only at that point in time will turkey compromise in any way. It certainly wont give up Cyprus a good twenty years before it enters with the promise that its application may be considered in twenty years time, provided ofcourse the referenda in france and austria dont block it. You must be having a laugh.

Image Dude, the occupied territory looks almost exactly like we left it in 1974 so where did those “billions” go?

The Anan plan was arbitration by the UN. You guys approved it.
Why are you afraid now? If you think you guys are right in your cause and the GC side is to blame, the court will favor you. TC fears to seek refuge in the court tells me otherwise. Are you willing to allow the court decide who is right and who is wrong? Your denial to accept the arbitration proves your quilt. Think about that for a sec...

Your position is getting weaker by the day, not stronger. The whole world is angry with you since the occupation is never forgotten and ongoing. The non-recognition status of TRNC is "living" proof of that.

Turkey has a lot of work to do, to satisfy the EU conditions of entry. Cyprob is indeed the major issue to be resolved. We are not flattered but upset of the ongoing Cyprob for 36 years and counting.

I tend to agree with you on that. Turkey would wait till the last minute to make consessions or compromises in Cyprus to finalize the entry. On a different note, Erdogan officially stated last week, he wants a solution by the end of this year. Why the rush?

I can assure you, this is not a laughing matter. The Cyprob is a humanitarian problem effecting hundreds of thousands of displaced people from both sides. Not sure why you think it's laughable. Austria, France etc have good reasons to object, Cyprob being one of them. Even if Cyprob is resolved, the entry of Turkey is doubtful but not impossible.
