“The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus cannot be forced forever to be the victim of the non-solution of the Cyprus problem if the will being shown by the Turkish Cypriots towards a comprehensive solution fails to get a positive response”. The statement was made after a meeting of the Turkey’s National Security Council (MGK) which convened yesterday under the chairmanship of President Abdullah Gül.
The results of the TRNC Presidential elections and the Cyprus negotiation process were among the issues taken up at the meeting.
The statement issued after the meeting underlined the importance of the announcement, which was made by Derviş Eroğlu after his election as the new TRNC President in a democratic and transparent election, and in which he stressed his determination to continue the negotiation process from where they had left off.
It said that Eroglu’s statement was welcomed both by the United Nations and Turkey.
“At the point reached, everybody has the responsibility to act with common sense and support a solution”, it said, noting that the fulfillment of the promises concerning the lifting of the unjust restrictions on the Cyprus Turkish People will contribute to solution efforts.
“As Motherland and a Guarantor Power, Turkey, will continue to provide full support to the comprehensive negotiations and the Cyprus Turkish Side’s constructive efforts”, it noted.
