The European Parliament’s Committee on Foreign Affairs has adopted a draft of Turkey’s progress report, which included harsh statements on the Cyprus issue, reports the AH Haber.
The report was prepared by the European Parliament Rapporteur on Turkey Ria Oomen-Ruijten. The report, together with amendments which included harsh statements, was approved with 60 votes in favor and 11 abstentions.
An amendment tabled by the British Rapporteur Andrew Duff calls for the immediate withdrawal of Turkish troops from Cyprus.
Another amendment underlined the need to resolve the issue of Turkish citizens settled on the island and to allow Greek Cypriot access to Maraş(Varosha).
The draft also calls on Turkey to actively support the Cyprus negotiations being held under the United Nations guidance with the aim of bringing a comprehensive political settlement.
AB Haber news agency reports that Greek and Greek Cypriot MEPs were happy with the content of the report while some members of the Parliament voiced the view that the report will not help the peace negotiations on the island.
The draft report is not binding, yet is important in terms of reflecting the EP’s stance towards Turkey, the news agency says.
