Greek Euro in the Toilet?

Postby vaughanwilliams » Wed Apr 28, 2010 11:28 am

Thank God it's the Greek Euro and not the Cypriot Euro that's going down the pan.

I thought the Euro belonged to everyone in the Euro Zone, including Cyprus and Greece, but GR, Milti, Oracle and Frag set me right on that and told me that Cyprus had its OWN currency which, just coincidentally I suppose, was also called the Euro.

So don't worry lads, your OWN Euro will be OK when the Greek Euro melts down.

Looking back at the figures, the Euro has gone down from 2.3Turkish Lira to 1.99TL, or 15%, since January 2010. It's OK though, as I think thats the Greek Euro they refer to.

You’re either very brave or very foolish coming out in public like this boasting about the Turkish Lira, which is a currency that in 2007 had no less than SIX DIGITS intentionally removed (think about that for a moment) and yet it’s still next to worthless!

Have a look at this…

1966 — 1 U.S. dollar = 9 lira
1980 — 1 U.S. dollar = 90 lira
1988 — 1 U.S. dollar = 1,300 lira
1995 — 1 U.S. dollar = 45,000 lira
1996 — 1 U.S. dollar = 107,000 lira
2001 — 1 U.S. dollar = 1,650,000 lira
2004 — 1 U.S. dollar = 1,350,000 lira
2007 — 1 U.S. dollar = 1.26 new lira
2008 — 1 U.S. dollar = 1.55 Lira
2009 — 1 U.S. dollar = 1.48 Lira
2010 — 1 U.S. dollar = 1.49 Lira

A lot of idiots come and go here vaughanwilliams, but you’re starting to become a memorable one… Image

So, from 2001 to 2009 apart from 2007, the TL has gained steadily on the dollar and seems reasonably steady ATM.
When the Euro goes tit-shaped, as it will soon, it will make the TL look like Swiss Francs.

Look, in 2010 the “New Turkish Lira” is STILL worth 1,490,000 old Turkish Liras! I hope you didn’t assume that anyone can just remove digits and get super rich overnight! To make things easier for you I’ve “converted” (added the digits back) to the table…

2001 — 1 U.S. dollar = 1,650,000 lira
2004 — 1 U.S. dollar = 1,350,000 lira
2007 — 1 U.S. dollar = 1,260,000 lira
2008 — 1 U.S. dollar = 1,550,000 lira
2009 — 1 U.S. dollar = 1,480,000 lira
2010 — 1 U.S. dollar = 1,490,000 Lira

Now, what were you saying again about the TL gaining ground and resembling the Swiss Franc?

Technically, all that Turkey has done is to ADD ANOTHER NOTE that represents a vast quantity of the old notes.

No, no, no... it's the opposite! 2007 was the strongest year for the TL because of the introduction of the new super note which must've encouraged confidence in the mostly uneducated Turkish public but its slipping back down again.

The euro is the euro end of.Cyprus does no longer have it's own currency which used to be the Cyprus pound, unless you are talking northern part which still has the turkish currency in use locally.

When I was in Greece in July last year 1 euro was equivalent to 1.8 Aussie dollar...Today it was 1.4 Aussie dollar...There is no doubt the euro is bleeding heavily these days, and I imagine that is why they have finally triggered the rescue package for Greece...Things will turn around in time, and the euro will start climbing again...No need to worry about it,and certainly no need to drag the Turkish Lira into it...

I’ll have you know that even the Turkish Lira has its little fanbase… they’re all on the C44 and I suspect vaughanwilliams is their leader! 8)

The Turkish Lira is obviously the currency to be in! I remember when it was 36 to a Cyprus pound and then after a few years it was millions to a Cyprus pound. Even the Greeks couldn't f the Euro up as much as that!
