He escaped from station together with Turkish citizen Kayar Ahmet and crossed into the TRNC on the 20th of April.

According to information provided by the Head of the Turkish delegation of the Technical Committee on Crime and Criminal Matters Hakki Onen, Onoufriou and Ahmet were arrested by TRNC police after the Greek Cypriot Administration informed the committee on the issue and demanded Onoufriou’s extradition.

Omoufriou – who committed no crimes in the TRNC – was handed over to Greek Cypriot authorities at the presence of UN officials with the minutes of the handover procedure

"after the Greek Cypriot Administration informed the committee on the issue and demanded Onoufriou’s extradition."

How could the GC police demand extradition from a country that doesn't exist? And I'm not sure you can "demand" extradition - surely you ask nicely? :D

I am sure they did ask very nicely,VW...

None of the above. I am pretty sure Onoufriou realized his "new" country is hell on earth and demanded to be handed back to RoC Authorities. Even the central jailhouse in Nicosia is a better place to do time instead of some junk yard up north. A wise choice.

@ halil & Yfred

The problem is not Muhtar A or Muhtar B. The problem is TECHNICAL.
Surely you can call from the north to UK or any other country from your mobile. DO you know why that is TECHNICALLY possible? Because Turkcell is joined with them. It has an account with them. The pay/charge each other...

The same thing is valid in the RoC controlled areas. And mind you it's not only CYTA that offers mobile phone connectivity. Is another 3-4 private companies.

@ halil:In case of emergency (it never happened to me anyway) i can easily use the UN telephone center. They connect very easily.

@ Yfred:Everybody can call each other from the occupied to the RoC areas through the UN. HOW MANY TIMES SHOULD I REPEAT IT? EVERYBODY. THe UN has about 50 free lines at any time. And they said if neededed they would offer more. But... guess what: The maximum usuage so far was 20 lines...

Pyro, it's because no fucker new they existed. Where does one have to go to make use of one of these lines? Finally why would I want to call anybody in the south, if I am not allowed to trade. Free trade via roc my arse.

The only way anybody in TRNC can communicate with the world is via Turkey. It has been since 1974.
Mail, Telephone and Travel have only been via Turkey and there are GCs that think we can just switch it off and turn our backs to Turkey.
Yeah and pigs will fly.

Skype works just fine however.

Do you recognise the legitimacy of the TRNC?

If not, perhaps you might consider showing some sensitivity, and doing people here the courtesy of referring to it either in inverted commas, as northern Cyprus, or any other such politically neutral term. The term TRNC is offensive to many, if not most of those who participate in the Cyprus Forum; and for very good reason.

Mal you are a clever guy but please dont telll gasman what to do. Perhaps others should tell her not to recognise the ROc as turkey does not do.

Just as the RoC is offensive to us and represent the suffering of TCs, could you please refer to it as south Cyprus?

No. We prefer to call it FREE CYPRUS. The north part is currently under occupation, if you haven't noticed.

Under this protocol or agreement both sides are cooparating against the crimes. We must be very happy about this. at least they are doing good job for both side interest and safety. I hope soon they can agree to solve the communication problem between both side and both side mobile phones can work as well.

Well said. The law is the law and that should unite all right thinking Cypriots.

From what I hear the Jailhouse in North Nicosia is filled to capacity plus some...And they are reportedly mostly settlers...Mr Onoufriou would not have been very comfortable if he was held there,so you might well be right...
