Postby Its Me » Sun Apr 25, 2010 8:50 pm

i have lime build up in my pipes from my house leading to the inspection pit.

what can i buy to get the lime moving/out?

they are plastic pipes, so nothing that may harm plastic.
thanks

Get a water softener...

The soft water will remove the lime scale... it will also protect your other pipes and appliances....

Hydrochloric Acid should do it. The pipes should be OK, but it will bugger your taps!

Well vinegar does a great job removing lime buildup in kettles, shower heads, etc, but I don’t know how you can get it to clean pipes without it running off! :?

Come to think of it… you can block the pipe at the inspection pit with material and then just pour a couple of bottles of vinegar down the pipe and leave it there for a while and then just pull it out.

Hydrochloric acid, which is available readily (in the north of the island) is effective but the fumes (hydrogen chloride) are far too dangerous in a closed none ventilated environment. If you can get your hands on Formic acid, it is as effective and far less dangerous.

If you can afford them, dishwasher tablets could be tried (Calgon).

So if you put a load of ants in the pipes, that should sort it out. They are full of formic acid, that is why an ants nest is called a formicary.

:D

They get pretty pissed off when you pour boiling water on them. Mind you, they get pretty 'dead' too!

I've successfully used 'FLUP' to clear pipes that have become clogged and slow to run away - dunno how many sachets you'd need for a big job tho!

 How about farting down the pipe so the tremors crack the lime loose? :?
