Of course, such change requires vision, planning and concerted effort - and it might well be anathema from the narrow perspective of the national ergolavos.

How little you know about Cyprus...

GR, presumably the purpose of the list of websites in your post is to show that not all the eggs are in the construction industry sector (unfortunate that some of the websites you listed are exactly in the construction industry sector - it would be better if you included website addresses like this one: http://www.lanitis-solar.com/ ) . I am sure there are many other cypriot businesses that are not in the construction-industry sector, and it would be interesting to see the percentages of contribution to the GNP of various sectors, perhaps in a separate thread. How little I know about Cyprus is a separate issue. The construction industry basket certainly seems to have quite afew eggs, if the hype about the development in question is anything to by ... But, to the main subject of this thread: Your post indirectly supports one of the main points of my post, i.e. that (a) a project like the one in question is not outside the capabilities of cypriot enterprises - thank you for that. My other main points, and it would be interesting to see your view on them, were that (b) the process by which this agreement was made is inappropriate (no ITT etc) (c) the deal in question includes the sacrifice of the most prime location in Nicosia and (d) it is yet to be demonstrated that on balance, the end result will be beneficial to the public good.

It looks like you're moving the goal posts! Just because someone manufactures a light switch you've decided to throw them into the construction industry! By your logic I guess the sandwich maker is also in the construction industry as he supplies construction workers with lunch!

:? Importing solar panels and installing them in various configurations is NOT manufacturing, whereas all the sites I gave you are manufacturers. From the website you posted...

“Lanitis Solar Ltd engages in the design, sale and installation of photovoltaic solar energy systems to private and commercial customers in Cyprus and overseas."

...and funny how you don't see solar panels as part of the construction industry!

Btw, the Cyprus bread basket is Nicosia and Limassol and specifically the banking & finance industry, so forget about the 200 odd piss-pot villas being built for Brits in Paphos each year because they don’t even cover RoC petty cash.

You are attributing to me things that I never said. Shame on you. Show me where I said that manufacturing of light switches is part of the construction industry. I did say that your list includes companies in the construction industry sector - a company in ceramics, granite etc is in the cobnstructionindustry sector
I would not classify solar panels as construction industry. They are in the energy sector, GR. Remamber energy? you know, that little thing that costs the cyprus economy millions of euros each year?
It is an interesting terminology, by which a "manufacturer" of ceramics is not deemed to be in the construction industry, but never mind, it is not central to the topic of this thread.

Now, as far as moving the goalposts is concerned: I did no such thing, unless you believe your own misapprehension by attributing to me things that i did not say. Moving goalposts is what you are doing by not giving a comment about the central topic of this thread when invited to do so (your prerogative, I suppose) and then changing the subject to villas in Paphos, when I am talking about the sellout of an important piece of public land in Nicosia in a deal that is at best dubious.

Found out today that the area to be used for the project is actually the Military Police base ("sagies" we called them) which have since been relocated. This brings back memories when I was arrested by them (ages ago) given a brutal haircut and thrown in the slammer for two days!

The area to be used for the project includes the land on which the Technical School currently stands. The area in total is, by Nicosia standards, a very large contiguous area. Even on the assumption that the project in question is the best use of the land, the process by which the project was awarded is dubious. No tenders were invited.

I’m not privy to any of the details of this project so I really can’t make ANY comments about that other than remind that this Qatar agreement is an old one going back at least two years that I recall reading about it, so it is safe to assume for now that any tender invitations may have happened ages ago.
