Because nipples are coded for on the X chromosome!
I know..it's because in the beginning we are all female...
I still say that the heart is not located on the left side.
I would rush to say we seem to agree on everything, but I just wanted to put that popular myth to the test and see where the limits are. Perhaps the default is female, perhaps it is not. How powerful is that little itsy-bitsy, bambino-ish Y chromosome?
Anyway, I agree the heart is fairly central, although for our purpose, its slightly (since these small things matter in biology ) left leaning is significant. Certainly the more powerful left ventricle is on the left side of the heart and this makes it more audible on the left side of the chest.
I was trying to draw some strings together after noticing that babies were represented as being fed on the left side in ancient Mycenaean statues (Kourotrophos) and the fact that babies are soothed by womb-like sounds which include the sound of the heart in terms of the pumping of the blood. For example:
When there are two babies to be fed, obviously we see both being used, as in this example from Sicily ...
Nowadays, we are told we only need to feed with one breast (the left) and leave the other in reserve if mastitis sets in or soreness. The breasts as you know only produce milk on demand and so those old wives tales of Deniz's and Gasman's about using both or being sucked dry are just laughable!
