TRNC President Eroglu aim is to Restart CYPRUS TALKS IN MAY

Postby halil » Tue Apr 20, 2010 12:31 pm

Eroglu said that the elections were over and that the time had come for him to take on his responsibilities as an independent and unbiased President.

He said that the Greek Cypriot leader Demetris Christofias had called him yesterday to congratulate him on his election and had expressed his desire to meet to resume the talks as soon as possible.

Explaining that preparations for the negotiations were underway and that he had formed his negotiating team to a great extent, Eroglu said that the aim was to restart the negotiations process in May.

Reminding that the Turkish Side, as expressed earlier by the Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, desired a solution by the end of 2010, the President-elect highlighted the importance for the Greek Cypriot Side to have the same willingness for a solution.

Evaluating attempts to set the Cyprus Problem as an obstacle in the way for Turkey’s EU membership process, Eroglu said that this was an invalid excuse not to let Turkey join.

He expressed the hope that the EU will see which side truly desires a solution and will act accordingly.

Eroglu also said that he will most likely be speaking with the Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu on Friday after swearing his oath.

Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu has said that everyone must respect the results of the Presidential elections in the TRNC, which he added, were the result of a successful and transparent process. The Turkish Foreign Minister also reiterated his country’s support to achieving a lasting and comprehensive peace in Cyprus.

Davutoglu is expected to attend the handover ceremony at the Presidential palace scheduled to take place this Friday.

Speaking at a press conference yesterday, the Turkish Foreign Minister said that the TRNC Presidential elections demonstrated how a deep rooted democracy existed in the TRNC.

Reminding that the President-elect Dervis Eroglu had stressed at every opportunity that he will resume the Cyprus negotiations process following the elections, he said “we shall continue to support the negotiations
whomever conducts them”.

He said that the international community should have no concerns concerning the future of the negotiations as the talks will effectively resume one way or the other.

Pointing out that he will be attending Friday’s handover ceremony at the TRNC Presidential palace, he said that this will be an ideal opportunity for him to discuss the future of the talks with Eroglu as well as other state officials.

UN EXPECTS CYPRUS TALKS TO CONTINUE

The United Nations spokesperson Martin Nesirky has said that the United Nations expects the Cyprus negotiations process to be continued after the Presidential elections in the TRNC. In response to a question on Sunday's presidential election, Nesirky said the UN expected the talks to continue under the auspices of the UN on the basis agreed by the two sides and in line with the relevant UN Security Council resolutions.

He stated that the UN will work with both sides to determine the date for the resumption of the negotiations and said that the UN Secretary General’s Special Adviser for Cyprus Alexander Downer will be going to New York next week to have discussions with high ranking UN officials on the issue.

Responding to a question, the spokesperson said that the election of a new leader is a matter for the TRNC people.

EUROPEAN COMMISSION SAYS IT IS READY TO SUPPORT EROGLU
The European Commission has expressed its readiness to support Dervis Eroglu in the negotiations aimed at finding a comprehensive solution to the Cyprus problem. Angela Filote, the spoke-person for the EU commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighbourhood Policy Stefan Fule, said that the Commission is fully committed to the immediate solution of the Cyprus problem which will be beneficial for all those living in Cyprus.

Noting that good progress has been achieved in the negotiations process towards reaching a bi-zonal bi-communal federation, she said that the European Commission will continue to support the Dimitris Christofias and the Dervis Eroglu in their efforts towards bringing an early solution to the Cyprus problem.

Interesting to note that, on the TV news reporting of Erogulu winning, they stated that he would continue talks with GREECE (not Cyprus!)

Gasman I saw something similar on a Turkish News Website. I do not think there is a distinction made by the Turkish Media between Greeks and Greek Cypriots.

This is like when the Turkish army bombed my village because some random Greek fanatic in another part of Cyprus ran amok in some arse end of cyprus-village. Some how the Turkish Army thought bombing me with napalm 11 years later was the next logical step. May the Turkish Army napalm every village where a Turkish Cypriot was harmed. Not a single Turkish Cypriot was even looked at in my village. I will donate money to the Turkish Army to napalm the houses where fanatic Greek Cypriots lived if they let me go home to my village.
