Eroglu said that the elections were over and that the time had come for him to take on his responsibilities as an independent and unbiased President.
He said that the Greek Cypriot leader Demetris Christofias had called him yesterday to congratulate him on his election and had expressed his desire to meet to resume the talks as soon as possible.
Explaining that preparations for the negotiations were underway and that he had formed his negotiating team to a great extent, Eroglu said that the aim was to restart the negotiations process in May.
Reminding that the Turkish Side, as expressed earlier by the Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, desired a solution by the end of 2010, the President-elect highlighted the importance for the Greek Cypriot Side to have the same willingness for a solution.
Evaluating attempts to set the Cyprus Problem as an obstacle in the way for Turkey’s EU membership process, Eroglu said that this was an invalid excuse not to let Turkey join.
He expressed the hope that the EU will see which side truly desires a solution and will act accordingly.
Eroglu also said that he will most likely be speaking with the Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu on Friday after swearing his oath.
Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu has said that everyone must respect the results of the Presidential elections in the TRNC, which he added, were the result of a successful and transparent process. The Turkish Foreign Minister also reiterated his country’s support to achieving a lasting and comprehensive peace in Cyprus.
Davutoglu is expected to attend the handover ceremony at the Presidential palace scheduled to take place this Friday.
Speaking at a press conference yesterday, the Turkish Foreign Minister said that the TRNC Presidential elections demonstrated how a deep rooted democracy existed in the TRNC.
Reminding that the President-elect Dervis Eroglu had stressed at every opportunity that he will resume the Cyprus negotiations process following the elections, he said “we shall continue to support the negotiations
whomever conducts them”.
He said that the international community should have no concerns concerning the future of the negotiations as the talks will effectively resume one way or the other.
Pointing out that he will be attending Friday’s handover ceremony at the TRNC Presidential palace, he said that this will be an ideal opportunity for him to discuss the future of the talks with Eroglu as well as other state officials.
