What's up with Paphos?

Postby Kangarooster » Mon Apr 19, 2010 12:27 pm

Everyone is leaving Paphos moving to Limassol, there's very few to almost no jobs available, people hear the word "Paphos" and go "Pft."! Where did this come from really? How did it start? I knew things were bad but now i'm starting to notice WAY more since i got more (unwanted) free time!

Dictionary.com says: Note: Today, the word feudal is sometimes used as a general term for a set of social relationships that seems unprogressive or out of step with modern society.

If that's what you mean oh we got plenty

In-breeding?

Seriously, the problem is twofold; firstly the £ has fallen around 25% compared to the €, which has made Pafos a very expensive location for its, primarily, British visitors - this has had a profound effect on tourism - more so that other parts of Cyprus which are favoured by Russian and Eurozone visiotrs.

Secondly, the property market has collapsed because of the exchange rate and the widespread publicity about Title Deeds, bankrupt developers, dodgy dealings etc.

For the last ten years, Pafos' economy has been built on these two building blocks; when they are taken away the edifice crumbles.
So, people turn to building shopping arcades and opening kiosks - all at a time when the number of customers is declining. Everywhere you see shops for rent or abaondonded, half built. It is all very sad.
Apparently, we have one kiosk for every 28 inhabitants!

Official unemployment figuers are about 6%, but these fail include the illegals working here and also those who have been unemployed for 6+months and are therefore no longer in receipt of Benefit. I suggested to a Cypriot friend that the figure was closer to 10% - he said it was far higher than that. It is all very gloomy.

Thats why Paphos needs to be bulldozed and incorporated into the Akamas National Park as a quintessential ancient town of Cyprus. An attraction but with restrictions on who can settle there permanently. (an investment of 1m Euros plus for starters.)

I would be happy if the'd bulldoze my summer apartment there too... at-least i'd get a compensation instead of trying to sell it.

Oh please you guys. You people make it out that Paphos is in another time zone or planet.
You won't find anything different in other towns. The same old dragged out, boring, commie block, ugly Greek adopted modern architecture, pot holed roads, garbage littered streets, deranged fagball lunatics etc etc.
The foreigner honestly cant tell the difference. Paphos is but a clone copy of Lim and Nic on a smaller scale.

haha! Wish there were more!
maybe we can get paphos looking like a more European town. Clean streets, beautiful modern architecture, neat town planning etc etc.
Especially the British! Look at Australia, Canada, USA..the british have layed down the foundations to some of the greatest civilizations ever known.
Also the Germans!
