Don't bloody start that again! It is Paphos!!!!!!!!

Dont you start that again. Palio calls it Pafos.

What does he know, he is from Palaiometocho and he can't even spell that right!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palaiometocho

Who am I to argue about the idiosynchrasies of the Greek language. (Greek Cypriot at that)

There are two official signs in close proximity on the road leading into the municipality which I inhabit, one spells the place "Agios Athanasios" and the other "Ayos Athanasios"!

The first one must be the newer of the two. We had a Minister of Education and Culture some years ago that "misinterpreted" a UN regulation on place name translation so all the Ayios became Agios Ayia Agia and the worst of all Paphos Pafos! The tried to change the name of where I live, but the council told them to p*ss off!

I found the bloody thing http://earth-info.nga.mil/gns/html/Roma ... _Greek.pdf

So since there is no ambiguity with the 'F' Paphos rom now on will be Pafos.
I suppose we no longer need the Anglicised version using ----ph----.

Developers warn of layoffs
By George Psyllides
Published on April 21, 2010

A PAPHOS-BASED development company warned yesterday it would be forced to lay off hundreds of employees if the government did not examine its long-delayed applications, and issue permits for various big projects.

“They have us pinned down,” Alpha Panareti Public Ltd manager Andreas Ioannou told the Cyprus Mail. “We cannot maintain the company – the personnel – anymore.”

On Monday, some 600 company staff, including management, staged a protest outside the Paphos town hall in a bid to highlight the situation.

Board chairman Neophytos Ioannou told the assembled crowd that the company has not secured any town-planning permits in the past two years despite submitting applications for large and important projects like a small marina, a golf course, a desalination unit, two electricity production units using renewable energy sources and other ventures.

The company blamed the delays on bureaucracy and the frequent change in policies of various government departments.

“Unemployment could have been contained and the marker could recover if the government immediately issued permits for all these projects within the framework of legality and good governance,” the chairman said.

Andreas Ioannou said the company could be forced to lay off 700 to 800 of its 1,000 employees if the situation continues.

“It has been two and a half to three years and still going,” Ioannou said.

It could also stop giving work to around 1,000 associates.

He said in the case of the small marina, the company had been told by the authorities to find a recognised company and pay it to check the bottom of the sea for antiquities, without guarantee that it will be granted.

“You are the state, conduct your checks and let us know,” Ioannou said.

Responding to the claims, the Interior Ministry issued an announcement saying that in no case there has been excessive or unjustified delay by any of its departments in examining the applications.

Concerning the golf course, the ministry said that the application faced various problems and the company was obliged to fill it in order to conform with the conditions set by the government.

Nonetheless, government departments have expressed serious reservations concerning the possibility of contamination of the Kouris reservoir by the golf course, the ministry said.

“Other applications by the same company present complications to varying degrees or compound evaluations are necessary due to their possible effects,” the ministry said.

The marina application is with the Trade, Industry and Tourism Ministry and its examination will proceed when the company submits the additional information that was asked.

Paphos was and is the place for losers. Historically, Cypriots would avoid going to Paphos unless they had to. Paphos was the least developed region for as far as I can remember. It was considered "hillbilly" country... Paphites even spoke differently than the rest of Cyprus.

1974 war, forced many displaced people, especially from the Famagusta area to move there. Cheap land attracted foreign capital, hence the large Brit settlements.

All the action is happening in Limassol & Napa area. Nicosia is more business like life. If Varoshia is returned, along with it's great beach & hotels, the action would move there quickly... Paphos to be sidelined again. For you folks living in the Paphos area, let me just say, you are in the "retirement" region... bedtime 9:00 pm at the latest.

Let's turn this topic on its ear and find out who the real losers are!

You may say that Paphites are losers, but it was people like you who ran for their lives as the Turkish Army advanced towards Famagusta. That's right, people like you pissed their pants, packed as many belongings into your vehicles and left, allowing the TA to cordon off the city. So now, people like you look at the Ghost City through barbed wire!

But the Turkish Army was ruthless, killed and raped indiscriminately I hear you say! Well, were they more ruthless than the Nazis as they sweeped through Western Europe, the Balkans and towards Stalingrad? No they were not. Did the Poles, French, Greeks or Russians also abandon their towns and cities? No they did not. They remained, they resisted, and they prevailed. Would the Paphites abandon their towns? We will never know! But, Paphos was the only region that did not fall to the Coupists. Paphos was free, impregnable to the fascists, resisted alongside the President of Cyprus from 'Free Paphos'.

And this is why I respect the Karpasites. They stayed behind, and many to this very day remain enclaved in their little village. "This is where we were born, and this is where we will die" they say.

So who are the hillbillies now? The Varoshiotes, the Karpasites, or the Paphites?

You people need to seriously get over yourselves. Cyprus is a mere speck on the map. About the size of Kangaroo island as a matter of fact, or 1/7th the size of Tasmania. Cyprus doesn't have regions. You are way too small for that, since metropolitan Sydney and Melbourne just about would cover the entire area of the island. If you want to bash your fellow country men and women, labelling them as "hillbillies" then you better make certain that you Varoshiotes are capable of much more than lifting up the skirts of uninhibited and free tourists when the times were good, and then abandoning your own city and handing it over to the TA on a silver platter when faced with danger. COWARDS!

That's right sunshine! The Turkish Army did not take Varoshia. You abandoned the city and gave it to them.

So I ask you once more! Who are the hillbillies? The Paphitis, the Karpasites, or the Varoshiotes?

(To the many Varoshiotes on this forum, who might find this post hurtful, you have my sincerest apologies. To any other refugees who might be offended, I also apologise).

But sometimes, people like giorgios100 need a good kick up the backside, and also reflect and why it is he is now condemned at viewing Varosha through barbed wire.

So who are the real losers? The Paphites or the Varoshiotes?

giorgios100, if you had half a brain, you would answer the above by saying that ALL Cypriots are losers when you somehow managed to hand over control of your beloved Varoshia to the Turks!

What a loser!

Hey giorgios100! Are you around?

I hate to rub it in too much, but I detect some early signs of a pick up in construction activity where I live (Agios Athanasios/Limassol). I have seen the bulldozers out flattening the land in readiness for construction work in a number of places over the past few weeks.

Firstly, learn to spell my name correctly... Georgios100, with a capital G.

Every country has a "Hillbilly" region. In this case, it's your region, Paphos. Surprised? Don't be.

I was an active soldier in 1974... where were you? Why you didn't come to rescue Varoshia from the Turkish advance... perhaps you were hiding under your mother's skirt... Who is the coward now!

We were ordered to withdraw from Varoshia, under orders from our military. We followed orders as we should. In the meantime, Paphites were going about their business(f**king the dog) as nothing was happening... what else would someone expect from Hillbillies like you.

You should be thankful that Varoshiotes moved to your area... upgraded Paphos to true Cyprus standards and teach you how to talk & behave... so just thank me.

Look, here is your town!

Image

Did it look so nice when you just abandoned it? You see giorgios, you can call Paphites whatever you like, but you fucking turned your back on Varoshia and gave it to the Turks. What a disgrace!

The word "hillbilly" is just an empty word when you use it against Paphities, but your betrayal of Varoshia is fact! When I call you a stupid coward, it ain't empty words. It is fact. You deserve it, and have fully earned the title. Who on earth does that georgios100? Who on earth just simpley abandaons their city like that! Where is your pride?

So where was I when this was happening? I was about 10 days old.

BTW, you did not use an a capital G, georgios100! look at your AVATAR!

Here is a picture of Paphos!

Image

ENJOY!

(Apologies once again to all other Varoshiotes!)

You was 10 years old... I was right! Hiding under mama's dress?

I was 20 years old while fighting in 1974. You, at 10 years, are calling me a coward? Where are you coming from?

It's because of me & many other brave Cypriots that stood & fought the Turks... otherwise, you would be speaking Turkish right now!

Like I said... just thank me. Thank the rest of the Cypriots as well for keeping you safe & free. Apologize immediately, as you should, to all CF members and never repeat again such slander, hillbilly!
