Some help needed with arithmetic

Postby Tim Drayton » Mon Apr 19, 2010 10:58 am

I have just studied the TRNC presidential election results:

http://www.yeniduzen.com/detay.asp?a=19439&z=19

The total number of votes cast was 125,294. So, for a candidate to gain 50% of the total votes cast, they would have to get 62,647 votes. Eroğlu got 61,491 votes, which I calculate to be 49% of the total votes cast.

Totalling the number of votes cast for each candidate, I get a total of 122, 062. Eroğlu's vote is more than 50% of this figure. Does this mean that he was only required to get 50%+1 of valid votes cast? So, does this mean that 3,232 votes were invalidated? If so, why? I can't help being reminded of Florida in 2000.

Tim the figures printed must ne wrong. I can't believe that nobody noticed it. Although I do not believe it would make any difference to the eventual outcome casue almost all T E's votes would go tohim too.
Lets face the TCs have had enough, and told Muhtar X to get stuffed.

Lets face the TCs have had enough, and told Muhtar X to get stuffed.

OK, even if we assume that 122,062 votes were cast, the winner needed to get 61,031 to avoid a run-off. In other words, Eroğlu did it by 460 votes only. This was a knife-edge result that can hardly be described as a ringing endorsement.

But unfortunatley even if it is by one vote, the winner is the winner as it were.

Oh I see says the blind man, majority rules when it suits you, but you want equal everything when the GCs tell you otherwise.

You like the idea of majority rules as long as it it you.

Bloody hypocrits, you are good for nothing, low life scheming turks.

Oh I see the staunch, neo-partitionist is back to tell us how its gonna be. Evryone seems to be jizzing themselves over his return, big F deal.

I disagree with you there. Talat, as a left-winger, appeals to the socially disadvantaged and lower income groups, and many migrants from Turkey are poor.

When will some people understand how politics works?
It is the same in every country.
There is left and there is right and sometimes a piggy in the middle.
