Don't forget the medication, you know what happens when you don't.

I think TC's in general like to over simplify things, Turkey wanted Talat to win but at the same time did nothing to change the outcome.

Does Turkey prefer Eroglu, no! My personal opinion is that Turkey knows that she ain't getting anything form the EU anytime soon, so is just playing for time as usual. Eroglu guarantees that nothing will change for at least 5 more years.

So let the bitching on to continue ...

Why is it so difficult for everybody to understand that there are conflicting interests in Turkey taking sides against the peace process and joining EU, and at the moment the non-solutionist who happen to be anti-EU have the upper hand.

Do you mean the AKP or the Military,Yfred...???
Erdogan seems to be winning his war with the military in Turkey...Could the Military be making a last stand,so to speak,in Cyprus??? What do you think?

Judging by the fact that the Military's man has won the election in the north and the very people Erdogan did not want have been nominated to negotiate suggests that the Military are on the attack against Erdogan and winning. Eroglu/Dengtash will stagnate the talks which means that EU will stagnate the talks with Turkey which will weaken Erdogan and Military will then have a their own anti-EU man in power after the next vote.
Then we can all join the old museum and play tavla to pass the time. Are you any good at it?

Yep,I have been playing it since age 5... :)

Do you think the Military is winning in Turkey as well?
I can't see Erdogan losing the election in 2011,Yfred...
You might be underestimating him...He is as cunning as a fox...The Military have no chance of toppling him without their guns...And he won't give them the excuse to use guns...Do you still think Erdogan really wants to join the EU???

Erdogan is only winning against the retired generals who have joined Ergenekon. To my knowledge he has not touched any serving officers, although I may be wrong on that one. The day he will be begining to win in Turkey, is when he removes the power of Guvenlik Konseyi from politics and makes it a security function only. He is is not winning anything while the generals are in power. What are the polls saying over there?
If the germans and the french start playing silly buggers and use cyprus to stall the negotiations with the eu, it will work against Erdogan. Without serious progress in the eu I don't think that Erdogan will be elected. Erdogan definately would like to join the eu. Turkey will get something like 10Billion euros joinign fee for her troubles. It is the millitary that do not want it. The way they see it is that they are in power and in Nato, why loose power and join eu?
To them control is more important then economic well being of the country.

My humble take -

Erdogan did not want Eroglu to win. Look at Erdogan's people those in key positions are in gereal eloquent, presentable, well informed and capable.
Erdogan want's to deliver the EU for the business people and common folk - this is a step back, however the EU has left no room for manoever between domestic expectations and EU demands. Why expend political capital where the outcome is not relevant.
Erdogan's beef with the military continues and he has the upper hand and he will continue to strengthen his position.
Denktas has support of the military and the grass roots Turks, his appearance on the scene is no positive for Erdogan, actually it is a risk.
However, Erdogan NOT the military has control of the purse strings.
Erdogan did not work to win the election for Talat, remember Talat has not been a great performer and risked being a liability by lack of performance, Erdogan was very public about his backing for Talat.
The military will NEVER coup again - Turkey's society still has embedded in it the culture of deference to your elders/superiors but significantly less so, particularly the younger generation. There is a movement towards individualism, entrepreneurialism and global awareness.

The TRNC election was probably one of the most democratic we've had for decades. Best thing for TCs now is to find a good opposition as that is the best way to evolve policy.

Side note: I bet Erdogan to win next election - any takers
Also: Count me in on a little of that ses bes action too...
Also: I was at a kebab shop in Istanbul a couple of months ago, there was a computer screen with charts on it - I asked what the man serving the kebab was watching - trading the IMKB, dollar and gold contracts he told me!

I also think Erdogan will win the next election with a reduced vote, but he might increase his share of seats in Parliament, depending on how many other parties get over the 10% limit...

YFred, most people in Turkey are very suspicious of the EU which they consider to be a Christian club...Erdogan has started to work this theme in his favour...The more Turkey is snubbed by the EU the more Erdogan will start telling them off,to win votes from the conservative voters who are his power base...This will actually increase Erdogan's vote in my opinion...

I agree with Acikgoz that the era of coup d'etats is over, and not before time...What we are seeing in Cyprus is Erdogan pleasing the Military by letting them have a small victory in Cyprus...I've always believed that the AKP was using Cyprus for its own benefit, and that also explains why they don't want a solution at this stage...And with Eroglu and his negotiation team we can kiss goodbye another 5 years... :(

We agree on one thing, it is not staight forward. Never say never. The military and logic do not go together, especially in Turkey.

But I am not so sure about playing tavla against you if you've been playing since the age of 5. Perhaps if we use coffee cups to throw the dice might even the game a little?

Maybe the "special relationship" proposed for Turkey will turn out to be a much better outcome than full membership.

From what has been proposed so far it does not seem bad, it gives all the advantages of membership with none of the bullshit and decrease in national sovereignty that full members have to accept.

It is conceivable that between now and next year the spin doctors in Turkey will form the image of such a solution as a desirable state of affairs.

And I bet you outside, in the street, there were little boys and girls selling tissues to the passerbys, and further along shoe-shiners,beggars,watersellers,pickpokets and what have you....Turkey is an amazing place...I was in Istanbul last July and was gobbsmacked at the contradictions in that fascinating society... :)

Sotos wrote:I want to thank my TC compatriots and especially the more numerous Turkish Settlers for shooting themselves on the foot yesterday :) Talat and Errorglue are the same shit. They both want partition in one way or another! But somehow this Talat managed to convince everybody that he is the good guy and EU, UN and everybody else were going out of their way to make small favors for him to keep him in his position. You greedy fools thought that those little things that sneaky Talat managed to get for you were not enough? You didn't deserve them. You owned it all to sneaky Talat and sneaky Erdogan! But now you didn't listen to them and you voted for Errorglue!! You are such greedy bastards!! Thank you! :D

Sotos, believe it or not, Erroglu is the best thing happen to G/cs after 1974- even better than EU membership, which Greek and Roc governments exchanged for nothing-until now.

I stated above for two simple reasons.

AA.Difficult diplomatic problems are ,usually ,created by fanatics.
BB.Difficult deplomatic problems are ,usually, solved by fanatics.!!!
