DERVIS EROGLU, who supports Turkish Cypriot independence, claimed victory in the north's 'presidential' election on Sunday.
Eroglu won more than 50 percent of the vote to avoid a run-off and beat incumbent Mehmet Ali Talat, according to preliminiary results.
Eroglu, who wants more autonomy for each community in any peace settlement, rules out concessions key to Greek Cypriots in reunification talks.
Any stalemate on Cyprus will further complicate Turkey's ambitions to join the EU.

Diplomats have said an Eroglu victory could slow the pace of U.N.-backed reunification talks
Talat has led the talks from the Turkish Cypriot side since they began in 2008.
Eroglu, now the 'prime minister' in the north has said he will continue to negotiate, but his advertised positions are not acceptable to Greek Cypriots.
"Talks will continue because I want peace more than those who say that I don't," Eroglu told supporters at a rally after preliminary results indicated he had won.
"I seek a solution based on the realities of the island and a solution that all of us can live with."
Eroglu wants more independence for each community in any peace settlement, a stance at odds with the basis of talks until now that the island should be a federation of two zones with an effective central government. He has also ruled out any Greek Cypriot return to land now held by Turks.
The conflict not only hampers Turkey's bid to join the EU, but also complicates decision making on defence issues between the EU and NATO, of which Turkey is a member.

That's all very well, but where is my friend to explain it all to us. He has done a houdini act.

Nobody has to explain it to you my dear Yfred......you know and the rest of the world knows that the settlers have spoken today. You are a minority in your own so called country and all of us are fucked now. We'll have to wait another 5 years untill someone with brains comes in to find a deacent solution. This prick is not going to do it for anybody. Let's see how far this clown can take you 8)

I don't think so. The seperation will happen before then. It's over. There is no more time left.

What seperation are you talking about? The world will not accept a 2 state solution. The island is to small for that. Recognition is not an option. If it was it would have happened long time ago. Just another 5 years listening to shit that the average person doesn't want to hear. Just be honest.....it's the settlers that have spoken today. The Tc community that everybody speaks of on this forum will not exist anymore. A sad day in history today.

Sad day indeed. Don't blame the settlers.
Your Muhtar X could not see to make a joint statement to on items agreed so far. Let's not kid ourselves. It is over. Muhtar X will not win next time for the same reason because Eroglu will do the same.
It is over. Cyprus will be no longer. It is pointless talking about unification now. Especially if Erdogan loses the next election which I am convinced he will lose for the same reason.

Your right....let's not kid ourselfs. Let's not start a blame game here. The items agreed on so far Talat used in his campaign. Muhtar X will not leave the table and regarding Erdogan losing the next elections I'm not so sure. Unification is not an option anymore due to the election of this clown. I'm hoping for some pressure from Turkey to keep this idiot in line with what was agreed the last couple of years. Again.....a sad day for the history of Cyprus because it can be done.

It was possible between the two leaders we had. It is now impossible. In anycase 5 years down the line the problem is even bigger than it was today. I just can't see it any more. It will end up as two states with or without the permission of the roc.

No twit. You can not have two states without the permission of the RoC. Aint going to happen. Thats another prediction and you can quote me...LOL

Watch it happen and weep then asshole.

You have been waiting for that for 35 years, B|TCH. Eroglu can claim he is going to give that to you but it aint going to happen. Nothing is going to happen if the RoC doesnt sign off on it first. Am i clear?

Personally surprised by the result - Turkey was definately behind Talat, I had it playing out as no winner in this round, some positive commitment to support Talat then Talat to win.

Even the Turkish news channels are reporting that Turkey is in hard position as before TCs had voted pro-unification therefore Erdogan could take easy path and let TCs follow their hearts and get into bed with GCs, now however even though they wanted to be rid of the Cyprus problem they cannot turn their back on TRNC that has shown it is concerned with the pro-unification hype of 2004-5.

For TCs the implication at this stage is unclear and anyone that believes they have the answer is in need of many assumptions. Although what is clear is that 2 state solution agreed by both sides is not going to happen any time soon - or even in our generation. However recognition is not essential for TCs only more freedoms.

For GCs the implications are also unclear but for the two bug bears 1. settlers 2. property development and sales.

1. Eroglu is pro citizenship for Turkish mainland, another 5 years of no solution will mean more harder to justify expatriation for current domiciles and new borns will have hatural rights.
2. Post ECHR TC businesses and developments have been very bold describing what they are doing, Eroglu very pro this progress to continue. Tam Arap corbasi.

YFred, so disagree with the 2-state recognition but respect for calling the outcome so early on and sticking with your view despite the strong support developed for the Talat camp.

You are missing the point, it is not recognition now, it is direct trade now and recognition can wait as long as it wants. We don't give a shit. But we will have to win sooner or later.

Dumbness on dumbness piled on still more dumbness.

Too much reading of ACTA drivel I guess.

Look this matter of trade is really very simple ........

CY already has direct trade with the EU and the rest of the World.

You want direct trade out of northern ports?

You want direct non-stop flights into Tymbou?

So what is the eu parliment going to discuss about implementing direct trade with the northern lands then. What is it that Muhtar X got very upset about just a few days ago?

Some of you boys are so easily mis-led, Trade is an Internal Matter, an internal matter for the Republic and the Republic alone to decide.

Now would some of you be good little boys and go and read your UN Resolutions, especially the ones that say something like .....

Direct trade, direct flights....when is that all going to happen? Haaa. Sure something may be passed somewhere that may temporarily get the President of Cyprus attention but its nothing that Cyprus wouldn't challenge and clearly win. You see, its all about the legality. You will come to see this in a few weeks time when Eroglu will not be able to deliver on his campaign promise of a two state solution to the Cyprus problem. There is no TRNC....its never going to get recognized. Never. Sowy. :D

Dumbness upon dumbness - you don't seem to get the picture either. By the intransigence of the south, the north is forced to find new avenues outside unification. Even if it cannot find any new avenues, consider another 5 years of status quo - from 1974 until 2010 (35 years) add another 5 years of no change where does it lead? 40 years of status quo greater than 50% of the average lifetime unresolved.
We see Kosovo, Taiwan, Macedonia et al and you can see it is not simply about recognition but practicalities.
Even the dumbest EU politician can see the ludicracy of the Papajackoff offer of Varosa for EU managed trade from Famagusta as a sham of a suggestion of direct trade being given for the North. If the RoC is unwilling to offer real solutions to the situation then they will lose control and have the actions taken outside of their control - perhaps not in the EU, but certainly ouside of it. The world can see that if you choose to abuse the responsibility you claim of governing the whole of Cyprus then that responsibiliy can and will be taken away from you.
The facade of the GCs is slowly and steadily being removed.
Get ready for another 5 years of whoring yourselves with anyone and everyone just so you may not compromise with TCs, pull out the lobby coffers, wine and dine the MPs for more of nothing but to keep TCs down.

Whatever way you look at this, the problem has been made more intractable and for anyone that wants a change in the status quo, it just got more difficult.
