Back to Eroglu and the talks- the following is from Politis paper correspondent in Istanbul:

"The director of Kibris, Resat Akar, mentioned that Eroglu must leave aside his pre election statements. "You cannot solve the Cyprus issue without concessions" Akar said, adding that Eroglu must continue the talks according to the wishes of Ankara. Akar said that any change at this stage would not benefit the TCs, Eroglu or Ankara. A similar view was expressed by public research company KADEM chief, Muharem Faiz who said that the negotiations are carried out in collaboration with a team from Ankara. Eroglu might have his objections but he cannot deviate from the positions taken by Talat in the talks."

So it looks like the talks go on and the schedule is for a conclusion by the end of this year.

So this just confirms what we have been saying all long, doesn't matter who is the leader, Turkey still rules. perhaps the TCs will listen to their own.

All we seem to get from people like Bir, Bananiot, YFred, VP is threats that we have blown it and we had better watch out because we are in for a kicking.

Nikita, there is no time frame, don't be putting that idea into their heads otherwise they will hold us to it. We will not be pressurised like they tried to do to us in Burgenstock (sp?), at least Tpap, saw it coming and stuffed them first.

We will agree a SOLUTION when one is agreed and not before, however long it takes. We have right and justice on our side.

My sympathies with the TCs has long gone when they tried to use the settlers against us, only to find, it is them that have now been shafted. They have well and truly shat on their own doorstep now, they can clean it up.

Having said all of that, I do take off my hat to the TCs on this forum, for all sticking together, unlike some of the wanker GCs who would bury their own over the TCs. Bravo TCs, this is another reason why the GCs have been fucked to date, we are such an animal unfortunately. I am ashamed even to say these things.

You have ignorance, arrogance, and stupidity on your side...I am talking about YOU,B25...Not my sensible GC compatriots...You are a rotten mushroom, and will remain so till the end of your days... :)

These are your characteristics. After all you have done to my country, you are expecting an apology from me/us and the gifting of 1/2 my country to a bunch of barbarians. Who is the arrogant one here? You display such stupidity that you think we are so soft that we are going to gift this country to you hand over foot.

You are the first class arsehole Bir, stop trying to play the saint here, as I said we have right and justice on our side. The UN, the EU and the International community says so.

What the future brings we will deal with it in due course, your threats are all empty. I fear not.

You got the leader you deserve, don't be blame me or the GCs on your own fuckups.

turkkan wrote:I would have thought most greek cypriots would be happy with these results, you can finally now have a scapegoat again for the lack of progess in talks. Its not as if anything christofias agreed with talat was going to pass any referendum in the south (or in the north by the looks of things), at least now you can continue pretending you support a bizonal bicommunal solution without having to compromise on anything.

turkkan, you do not need to imply that "greeks" need a scapegoat. you forget that denktash for thirty five years was cited by every SG of the UN as the person who was singlehandedly most responsible for the delay to a Solution.

you may dismiss Bizonal, and Bicommunal but it is the "compromise" "Greeks" made with counterparts, and it is the Principal
as Cypriots, we must define for ourselves, more import
antly, with our choices we are committed to define them for the rest of Humanity.

let us also remember that Denktash stood with Papdopoulos, asking that the referendum be delayed, and that after having opened the gates. let us remember that he who refused their plea, cried at the founding of the Constitution Denktash wrote.

so it's not so cut and dry this "Turkish" / "Cypriot" thing, and anyone who loves this island is apprehensive, what with the politics we have today. Thus, Eroglu may be a tonic, if he is prepared to explore neither; a Nation builder, a Statesman, "Greek"/"Turkish", off the table like the Annan plan. but rather, a Social Politic which can be emulated anywhere where there is a need to define People as Individuals. and as well, as Persons; Bicommunal.

Furthermore as Cypriots, we can demonstrate the respect we have for diversity within our own cultures geographically if within the existing divides, enclaves are introduced allowing for the return of people as communities and, as Inividuals island wide.
(think what it will mean, how many "kinds" of Greeks/Turks there will be, because our lives without isolation cannot remain monoclonal; cool, eh?.)

what i am most worried about is that the "Turks of Cyprus" will be subjected to a Proxy War of a kind, between the Army and Erdogan.
...if this is a loss for mr.E, and a victory for the deep state.

TRNC Presential election comments from southern Cyprus Press.

1. Eroglu wins elections in the north

Dervis Eroglu yesterday claimed victory in the north's presidential election on Sunday, winning more than 50 percent of the vote thereby beating incumbent Mehmet Ali Talat and avoiding a run-off.

Eroglu, who wants more autonomy for each community in any peace settlement, rules out concessions key to Greek Cypriots in reunification talks.

According to Bayrak television Eroglu told his supporters that “the Turkish Cypriot people are the victim of the existing situation as they are still being isolated and subjected to embargoes. Therefore, we and our people are in favor of concluding the Cyprus issue”.

He said his first task will be to consult with Turkey and assess the situation and he would then establish his own expert negotiating team as well as set up a national council.

He said he would seek an agreement that will not disadvantage the Turkish Cypriot people and would consider Turkey’s interests as well.

He reiterated his position that the Turkish Cypriot people are an equal and sovereign people. And that he would be defending his people’s rights at the negotiating table.

He added that he did not run in order to obstruct the negotiations but to defend the rights of the Turkish Cypriot people. “We want a lasting and sustainable agreement. There are simple principles to ensure this, and we will discuss these principles in detail at the negotiating table”, he said.

2. Erdogan wants a solution by the end of the year

Kibris reports that after the results of the elections in the north Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan stated that the new president should continue the process with the same determination.

He pointed out that Mr Eroglu’s views are not different than his own on this issue and reminded that Mr Eroglu has stated many times that “we will continue our way with determination”.

“My wish is for us to end this job by the end of the year”, he added.

Moreoever, Turkish daily Hurriyet reported from Ankara that Erdogan has urged Cypriot leaders to continue reunification.

‘It cannot be the Turkish side that escapes from the negotiation table. If there is a party that keeps [away] from the table, it should be them [Greek Cypriots],’ Erdogan said in an interview late Saturday with private television channel Kanal 24.

“My sincere wish is for the continuation of talks with the same commitment. We are seriously committed to the completion of these talks,”Erdogan said.

"Mr. Talat brought the negotiations to a very important level. I hope we will be able to conclude them by the end of this year through negotiations, which will resume after the elections. We should preserve our commitment with the spirit of win-win, " Erdogan said.

3. Reaction in the south

Cyprus Government Spokesman, Stephanos Stephanou said that Eroglu’s election was a negative development but that now they must sit down and evaluate the situation in a spirit of unity. He also announced that President Christofias would be writing a letter to the UN Secretary General about the election of Mr Eroglu in the north in which he will stress that the talks must continue on the basis of what has been agreed so far.

The Greek Cypriot political parties all said that Eroglu’s election was a step backwards. Akel leader Andros Kyprianou said that the Greek Cypriot side must insist on continuing the negotiations and that if there is no response to expose Eroglu. Disy vice president Averof Neofytou stressed that the Greek Cypriots had missed many opportunities while Talat was in power. Edek leader Omirou said that now the Greek Cypriot side should remove certain unacceptable positions such as the rotating presidency while Diko leader Marios Karoyan said that this negative development does not change the fact that it is Turkey that is controlling Turkish Cypriot politics.

4. Politis evaluates

Politis says that according to diplomatic sources, the UN is evaluating the situation after the election of Dervis Eroglu and have reached the conclusion that the only way to control the nationalist Turkish Cypriot leader is to make him sit at the negotiating table in the context of an international conference next to Turkish Prime Minister Tayipp Erdogan and under the watchful eye of the international community. The paper says the international community in general views Eroglu as a “necessary evil” for the northern part of Cyprus, in view of the fact that Talat lost the confidence of the Turkish Cypriot voters as a result of the financial irregularities that were committed during his rule. They consider Eroglu to be Ankara’s mouthpiece and more amenable to Turkey’s arguments. If it turns out that Ankara will not allow Eroglu to turn towards the setting up of two states during the negotiations, then everything is possible, with the opinion in the north being that a right-wing hard liner would be better able to sell a solution than a left-winger.

In a short statement after the announcement of the results, President Mehmet Ali Talat said `today, the people reflected their will to the poll`. Talat said “my dream to reach a solution is still there, but of course this is the beginning of a new era”.
Noting that the solution of the Cyprus problem is vitally important, Talat said he would be continuing to work for a settlement.

Meanwhile, President Talat has phoned Prime Minister Eroglu to congratulate him on his election.

GOVERNMENT FALLS

The General Secretary of the governing National Unity Party Irsen Kucuk has announced that the government has fallen following the election of Prime Minister Dervis Eroglu as President. Kucuk told BRT that the UBP has lost its majority within the Parliament after the election of Mr Eroglu as President.

Now, the UBP has 24 MPs in the 50 seat TRNC Parliament.

Küçük stated that the government will remain in power as a minority government with the unconditional support to be provided by the Democrat Party until the 27th of June when the local and by-elections will be held.

He noted that the formation of a coalition government will be brought to the agenda after the filling of the seat emptied by Prime Minister Eroglu.

Is there a chance that UBP and DP would merge,Halil???
I assume Serdar Denktas was promised something in exchange of supporting Eroglu...Could they go as far as that???

Like ... new prime minister?

Time will tell,Tim...You can't hide the truth forever in politics...

According to the CyBC news, which I have just watched, Serdar Denktash will be appointed chief negotiator and Denktash senior will be appointed as an advisor to the negotiating team. I do not like the sound of that, somehow.
