Voice over Internet Protocol telephony - (CYTA customers)

Postby Get Real! » Sat Apr 17, 2010 1:03 pm

Voice over Internet Protocol telephony - CYTA customers…

I’m interested to hear from people that are using this CYTA service.

1. Is it reliable?

2. Does it chew up your internet bandwidth?

3. Are you using a QoS supporting Switch and do you recommend it?

4. Any other advice you may have on this?

Thanks in advance.

Regards, GR.

i have CYTA 4mbit BUSINESS DSL service.. it costs something like 240Eur a month + some ISDN lines. I never get 4mbit speed, anytime you want to see a youtube video it will get stuck 5 seconds later even on lowest quality.

But, on your subject here... calls are so cheap now, i cant be bothered with all these IP phones...

Its the worst fucking internet service provider in human history, stay away from them and get yourself Cablenet.

Ray, it doesn’t sound like you’re using Voice over IP so you can’t answer my questions. :?

Voice over ip doesn't use almost any bandwidth. You can try a brief example by just doing a skype call and monitor your bandwidth being used by netlimiter.

@Ray Youtube doesn't provide you the upload speed of your download simply because it doesn't have the power to do so. Imagine 1million users who wanted to load a video at their maximum speed of their internet. Seriously their servers would just die in no time. Thats why they stream at the appopriate speed that is required to view the video.

If you want to really max out your bandwidth and check if your being capped by your provider you can always try a private torrent with lots of seeders to check. I can provide you with one if you want.

And what I love about Cyprus internet, is that it never suffers from packet loss. NEVER!

Are we talking things like the free version of Skype?

Use this frequently from here in London, with a 2mb connection, works very well, including for video calls. Frequently chat with relis in Oz... very reliable.

It's not a free version because you have to register a number on your ip address

With CyTA providing a PSTN line, how do they give VoIP? Do they supply a seperate VoIP box to connect to the router, or do they swap over the router for one with VoIP capabilties?
