So it would appear only 1 political party(CTP) was in existence prior to 1974 hostilities. All the others came in gradually, seeking power...

Here is a quick pic of CTP.

The Republican Turkish Party (Turkish: Cumhuriyetçi Türk Partisi, CTP) is a social democratic political party among the Turkish Cypriots. The party was founded by a lawyer, Ahmet Mithat Berberoglu in 1970 as an opposition to the Turkish Cypriot leadership of Fazıl Küçük and Rauf Denktaş.

In the 1980s, the CTP's political position shifted to the left, to a pro-Soviet stance, as a result of an influx of members who had been students politicised at universities in Turkey. Under Özker Özgür the party started participating in rapprochement meetings with the leftist party AKEL.

From 1996 the party was led by Mehmet Ali Talat until his election as the president in 2005 succeeding Rauf Raif Denktas. After the fall of the communism in eastern Europe and USSR a natural process of change started. The party's leader today is Ferdi Sabit Soyer and the party is leaning towards the European social-democratic and liberal system.

Conclusion.

Denktaş was apparently not doing a good job of representing the TCs, hence the creation of CTP. All this before the 1974 war. The remaining 8 political parties created post 1974 are opportunistic, power hungry and will try any or all tricks in the book to get support from the people.

Good luck to all of them. Personally, I believe too many roosters don't help but hurt.

You'll find that TCs did not have time to set up parties prior to 1970 on account that GCs were hell bent on wiping them of the face of the earth, and had difficult enough job trying to survive never mind think about politics.

The TCS did not have time to form political parties prior to 1974 because they were too busy kissing British asses to get handouts instead of joining the struggle for freedom and gain political power for themselves. They picked the wrong avenue, a fatal choice, hence the mess they are in today.

Even so, why so many parties nowadays? In Canada we say "too many chiefs, not enough indians..."

Denktas & TMT kept the TC side "quiet" for a while using brutal force at its own people. I wonder if Denktas should be facing the military tribunal for war crimes against his fellow TCs. He is no different than Saddam Hussein (killing thousands during his 30 year reign of terror).

INDIA. In the parliamentary election in 2004, unbelievable as it may seem, some 228 political parties contested out of which 39 have representation in Parliament; many of them by just winning one seat.

Surprised? When working with numbers, you shouldn't be.

India. Population 1,139,964,932 divided by 228 parties = 49,998
Cyprus. Population 863,624 divided by 17 parties* = 50,801

* 17 parties in total (seats or no seats in parliament).

Georgios100

So what have you leared today Georgy? What conclusion have you reached today?

Divide the population of a country by 50,000 and this should tell you how many political parties that country has.

Do the math - again!

India. Population 1,139,964,932 divided by 228 parties = 4,999,846
Cyprus. Population 863,624 divided by 17 parties* = 50,801

4,999,846 divided by 50,801 = 98 ==> 100 times as many political parties in Cyprus - adjusted for population

Noooooooooo. That's just a bit of friendly banter with my patriotic GC cousins, thats all. That's not bein orrible.

Got that completely wrong then. You have always been a gent in my book. Thanks for confirming that. Goodnight.
