Isn’t it time we reconsidered Cyprus’ entry into the EU?

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

In the six years that we’ve joined the EU, all I’ve witnessed as a Cypriot citizen is a major fall in the quality of life Cypriots once enjoyed!

We’ve had a surge of foreigners gaining entry into the country which has led to a huge unemployment level by Cyprus standards, and a massive increase in crime including the introduction of crimes that were unheard of before!

On top of that our government is being pushed to legalize gay marriages, establish drug centers for junkies, the underworld has gained strength, and in the last five years gambling has taken biblical proportions on the island with a betting shop sprouting every 200m! Where exactly are we heading?

For whatever its worth, EU entry has also made Cyprus a very expensive holiday option that can no longer compete with other non-EU Mediterranean destinations.

Politically, entry into the EU has been a total failure as it has not upheld international law pertaining to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of UN-member Cyprus, and if anything it has encouraged Turkey to further cement her illegalities!

I can almost write a book about all the problems that have surfaced in the last five years but I’m going to keep this thread intro short and rather clattered due to lack of time.

Btw, on the plus side… the price of Scotch has come down by about 35%!

Does anyone else see a problem? Alarm bells ringing? :?

Can't comment on day-to-day, on the ground issues as I'm in the UK (English Midlands), although I certainly experienced the higher cost of living on my last visit to Cyprus. However, I think EU membership has helped enormously in enabling Cypriots, certainly beyond the island's shores, to (re)discover their sense of self. Those that take the trouble consider the significance of such matters, no longer feel the need to establish their European credentials via a third political entity and/or distant, mythical historical legacies.

I agree with you totally . Pre EU Cyprus was like a candle in the wind , it is now an island that is part of the most successful union of nations in the history of the world. Much is to come , these are early days and the best is yet to come !

get CY out of EU is equevalent to Junta actions in ROC in 1974.
Turks obtained an "angouri" because of this membership and "the most clever citizens in the world " (GCS)are still thinking like Makarios did ..long time ago-that ROC IS THE CENTRAL PLACE OF EARTH!!!!

Paradise IS CYPRUS and CYPRUS IS PARADISE !!
When in the 50s we were demanding ENOSIS with Greece we were so naive , it should have been the Greeks demonstarting in the streets of Athens and elsewhere demanding ENOSIS with mother Cyprus , then we could have had the pleasure , as the dirty swines did , to reject them !!!

Get with it VP...Here in the USA they are already talking about a 100 year war in order to get all the nations pointed in the correct direction, and you are telling us that the Eu will be no more...in 15 years, if Turkey doesnt jump on board then the Turks will surely be vanquished into oblivion.....
