If Famagusta is returned...

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

Calculate on the whole town, infrastructure and all, being replaced, along with 15000 dwellings and several hundred hotels and public buildings.

In short we are talking of a major civil engineering project wbich technically is withing the capabilities of the local construction industry. The trickle down effect will be huge for the whole economy.

As for returning, well I am a Varoshiotis, and I would return to claim my part. Even if I did not want to live there, I want a stake in the town. That goes for all the Varoshiotes friends of mine.

As for the TCs who lived in the old city, they seem to have had no trouble fleeing from there, apparently they do not feel for their part of town the same way we feel for our part. But I do not blame them, walled cities do not do it for me either. I never liked living in old NIcosia before moving to Famagusta. Those walls give me such a choking feeling.

I am Varoshiotis too, like you Nikitas.

Rebuilding the whole city requires some big bucks. A boast to the local economy, yes. Finding the money... yes and no. I estimate at least 20 years or more to bring the city back from the dead... I'll be dead by then anyway.

Honestly, I think Turkey should pick-up the tab for this effort. Turkey is the responsible agent for this mess.

I know which one is your house, and authorities in the northern territories have been made aware of your thoughts regarding TCs and houses to hand over. They assure me they will not touch yours. You will have to pay yourself for it to be demolished.

I suggest all the help money roc received and never passed on to TRNC should be used to rebuild the Evkaf stock in Varosha.

YFred,

I know you find this amusing but I can assure you I don't. If you were in my position, having to look at your house via a telescope for the last 36 years, you would be more pissed than I am. Turkey captured the city, looted and fence it for no apparent reason. The city is left to rot... for what? Can you give me an explanation? Turkey ordered all of the above, therefor Turkey should pay to restore the city to it's original glory.

As for you, a typical "campesino", no one expects a decent answer or comment from you, so stop waisting your saliva, in this case, stop wearing your finger tips by typing further text on your keyboard.

George please understand, that I can stand within 10 meters of my land but I am not able to use it. No need for telescope. I know exactly what you mean when you crave for your property back. The roc has done the same to me and the rest of my family.
Thieving bastards that they are.
Please do not worry about my fingers, I dictate all my posts. Does you PC not have speech recognition or is your accent too bad?

As far away as ever???

Postby cymart » Tue Apr 13, 2010 4:31 pm

From what Papandreou said yesterday,Turkey is ready for a solution but is in no hurry and it looks like we will have Eroglu to deal with as from Sunday? So unless there is an international conference,Eroglu will drag his feet and play with the nerves of the G'C's!This will suit the rejectionists on this side and also help Christophias avoid more trouble with DIKO and thus ride things out until 2013,when wanker Karoyian is already waiting to take over as president if Akel do not have their own candidate! This is my worse case scenario but unfortunately Cyprus seems prone to always taking the worst options....Mind you there are two other things to consider, the first being that the Greek-Cypriot economy is heading down the tube and secondly that the E.U. will allow direct trade with the north if there is no solution this year!
So which is best,AIDS or Cancer?

I think Georgios needs some reality check...
Georgio, in 2007 I returned to my ancestral village, near Paphos, and here are some pictures to show you what I found...

Image

This is me sitting on the ruins of my house of birth...This was a solid house made of stone, and there is no way it fell down all by itself...Not even after 33 years...Someone obviously removed the reusable heavy timber poles and the wooden beams which held up the house...Most of the stones have been removed as well...

Image

This is my grandparents house across the road from the first picture..
This met with the same end...Part of the front wall is all that is standing...

Image

And this was the courtyard of a 3 storey house (my ancestral home, built like a castle!) which completely disappeared...All that is left is part of this stone-built oven...

Now compare these to the one below....

Image

This is another house I lived in,also in the South,in Aytotro (Ayios Theodoros in Larnaca)...This house is obviously weather/age beaten but still standing...

So before you speculate on what Turks or TCs might do to the GC houses they live in ,before handing them over, spare a thought for hundreds if not thousands of TCs who have already returned to find all their properties and memories destroyed...

These are pretty old buildings (stone & wood) dating back at least 100 years, but still, it would appear, some human intervention took place, judging from the ruins. Thanks for the pics.

Surely, the scorched earth principal works both ways. From the GC side, I believe the properties in question are triple as compared to the TC side. Most of these homes are in good condition today... so why trash them? Greek Cypriots visit their occupied homes often. If they finally get them back but vandalized & stripped, animosity & anger is on the front burner of the stove... again.

There must be some way to prevent this from happening in the future.

BTW, you look pretty young in the pics...

But what makes you think the houses would be vandalised???
Why should anyone want to destroy a house which provided them with shelter for so long...??? :? :?

Both and perhaps if CBBB gets both we'll all be better off.
