The above are just TC myths and exaggerations. Yorgadjis yielded much power and influence within the Makarios cabinet, but was never more influential over former EOKA members than Grivas and Makarios themselves. There were no EOKA remnants. The organisation did not exist. There were many former EOKA fighters who were rewarded with positions of High Office or became senior public servants.

There was only the CNG and Cyprus Police, who were under the command of Makarios, followed by Yorgadjis and Grivas. TMT strongholds at Kophinou and Kokkina were attacked by the CNG, for blocking the Nicosia to Limassol highway at Kophinou and for Turkish arms smuggling in Kokkina. Even after weeks of CNG and police patrols being attacked, Makarios hesitated and did not want to attack the TMT. Eventually CNG personnel were killed from TMT ambush along the highway, and so Makarios was left with no other choice. The strongholds were reluctantly attacked, and this is what the TMT wanted.

Yes BIR, TMT kept ambushing ROC CNG and police, some were killed, and then the ROC attacked back.

You still refuse to answer my question...There was no CNG in 1963,the two sides could NOT come to an agreement between 1960 -63 to form it...So,
WHO WERE THE GC PARAMILITARIES WHO WERE ATTACKING MY ENCLAVE IN NICOSIA AT THE END OF DECEMBER 1963,IF NOT EOKA REMNANTS????????

Here we go again, you self-serving Turk.

The TCs disrupted governmental processes, organised illegal gangs of TMT with their own insurgent army, prepared enclaves to assist the partition of Cyprus and then you have the audacity to complain if our ministers defend the territorial integrity of the Republic of Cyprus by organising a Greek Cypriot defence!

Spot on!

There was Civil Disobedience from TMT supporting Turkish Cypriots to further Partition, and Yorgadjis responded by sending in the Police!

So are you saying that all TCs killed during this time were TMT and there were no innocent TCs picked on the road side and killed. My god the police were killing innocent civilians. RoC RIP.

YFred, please be kind to Paphidis...He is very happy in his ignorance, his denial of the facts you and I lived through in Cyprus...Sudden onset of reality might send him further around the bend...Have pity on him!Let him stew in his own juices...

Do you want to tall us about the stash of TMT weapons your father stashed under your bed? Weapons that were probably used to ethnically cleanse Armenians from Old Nicosia and which were probably used against the RoC's Police in order to spark the violence to further your Partition objectives.

Sure...The weapons were for defending ourselves against possible EOKA attacks...They were not under my bed but in my bed,to hide them from the British...The place was Yialia,in Paphos, and the time was 1957-58...Anything else you would like to know????

The atmosphere on the island was tense. On December 21, 1963, serious violence erupted in Nicosia when a Greek Cypriot police patrol, ostensibly checking identification documents, stopped a Turkish Cypriot couple on the edge of the Turkish quarter. A hostile crowd gathered, shots were fired, and two Turkish Cypriots were killed. As the news spread, members of the underground organizations began firing and taking hostages. North of Nicosia, Turkish forces occupied a strong position at St. Hilarion Castle, dominating the road to Kyrenia on the northern coast. The road became a principal combat area as both sides fought to control it. Much intercommunal fighting occurred in Nicosia along the line separating the Greek and Turkish quarters of the city (known later as the Green Line). Turkish Cypriots were not concentrated in one area, but lived throughout the island, making their position precarious. Vice-President Küçük and Turkish Cypriot ministers and members of the House of Representatives ceased participating in the government.

So BIR, can you tell us about the weapons your father stashed under your bed, when in actual fact there were no EOKA paramilitaries and the whole incident you were referring to involved violent TC crowds within the Nicosia enclave and Cyprus Police?

As you can see, after 2 TCs were killed in the incident, the TCs were already prepared and also began firing and Turkish paramilitaries took control of St. Hilarion. Quite amazing since there was no violence up to that point.

I guess the TMT was getting ready for Partition!

ADISOK no longer exists DT. Basically it merged with Vasiliou's party and formed EDI. In the first years EDI counted to 2 MP's but its base was slowly eroded and eventually it failed to elect anyone 4 years ago. A party which is outside the Parliament is due for a quick death as it loses all government grants.

We should always be mindful of the very important strategic importance of St Hilarion. Whoever controlled the high ground there, controlled the road north from Nicosia to the coast at Kyrenia. Phase One of an Invasion.

In his book, which has just been put on sale, Drusiotis refers to a message sent by Papdopoulos to the Americans in August 1964 in which he said, "the Greek Cypriots planned to sort out its internal problems". In his message Papdopoulos, who at the time was the Minister for Labour and the Vice Chairman of the Akritas Organization, had stated that: "If the Turkish fleet enters within 12 sea miles of our borders we will count this as being the start of the invasion. According to our calculations and with the aim of defending ourselves this gives us 75 minutes in which to exterminate the Turkish Cypriots. We have the plan and opportunity to do this".

Referring to documents obtained from the USA National Archives of Research Administration, the author stated that Papadopoulos' threat to annihilate the Turkish Cypriots later became a Council of Ministers decision and according to General Karayannis this decision had been conveyed to him by Minister Yorgacis, who had requested him to identify two Turkish Cypriot villages to be destroyed following the end of the deadline given to him. In his book the author also included documents that stated that Karayannis rejected to take on the responsibility "for killing defenceless people".

from another source about Yorgacis:

General Karayannis who commanded GC for almost a year has written in the Greek press explaining how these secret Greek armies, under the direction of Makarios and commanded by the minister of interior Mr.Yorgacis had been prepaired one year before the beginning of the Greek Cypriot onslaught against the Turkish cypriots.General Karayannis wrote:when the TC's objected to the amendment of the consititution Makarios put his plan into effect and the Greek attack began in december 1963.

Thanks for the post-invasion propaganda!

The reality on the ground was that we GCs, and our government, were attacked by TCs and their insurgent army of TMT. All the GCs and their leaders did was to help protect us against this terrorist organisation which represented the 60 Million Turks who have sought to subjugate and slowly exterminate us from our own island.

No one (GCs) rose up against the TCs! The TCs attacked the government and the infrastructure and the people who resisted this attack against the territorial integrity of the RoC!

All of Droushiotis's books are very well documented and nobody so far has dared to challenge them (except Mr Thasos, the President of ex EOKA members association who nevertheless is a dubious character that is not taken seriously). Droushiotis has written a lot about Yiorgadjis and all people interested in this dark man should read Droushiotis rather carefully. I can provide some excerpts for you but you need to be patients because I do not have English versions of his books. Perhaps, a little bit at a time, if this thread stays alive for a while.

First I should like to point out once again that the armed struggle waged by EOKA for enosis was failing miserably by 1959. Makarios and a few others in his entourage (Akel's representative, Lyssarides, Papadopoulos) did not want to sign the London Zurich agreements for an independent Cyprus. Remember, the aim of the struggle was enosis or death. However, he was forced to sign, with a heavy hand, because the game was lost by then. Karamanlis informed him that the Brits knew exactly where Grivas was hiding and that in the case he did not signed he would be picked up, dealing a fatal blow for EOKA. So, it is easy to sit back and say that he shouldn't have signed but have you thought of the consequences of such an action? On his returned to Cyprus, Makarios cried "Nenikikamen" "We have won" and the struggle of EOKA with its legendary leader still at large was vindicated.

Makarios signed with a heavy hand, as we have seen. However, from day one of the independent era, the Greek Cypriot leadership, started working on a plan to create an Organisation that would continue the struggle of EOKA. Yiorgadjis was instrumental in the implementation of these plans with the blessing, of course, of Makarios. On March 31 1961, the first serious political crisis erupted between the two communities. On this day the TC members of Parliament voted against the paper on taxation policies that was presented by the government. Perhaps that was the excuse needed for the implementation of the plans for the creation of the Organisation.

Yiorgadjis was in London on that day. He said that reasons of health took him to London. Nobody believed him. George Lagodontis, the leader of CID, installed by Yiorgagjis, claimed that the visit to London had to do with his plan to assasinate Sampson and some of his body guards (Lazaris, Kikas). Lagodontis claimed that Yiorgadjis asked him to assassinate these three persons while he was in London so that nobody would suspect him. Little did he know that Lagodontis was also close to Sampson and in fact gave him ample protection. Lazaris was arrested and sentenced to death by hanging while Kikas was later assassinated in Famagusta by Yiorgdjis's men.

It is also well known that Yiorgadjis never participated an any shootings or fights with the Brits. Many claim that he was an agent of the Brits and he always managed to escape prison with a little help from his friends. Early on, when EOKA first started its struggle, Yiorgadjis was arrested with Michalakis Karaolis and was charged with killing a Greek Cypriot policeman. Karaolis was sentenced to death and was hanged in 1956. He was the first EOKA fighter that was hanged by the Brits.

Yiorgadjis walked away clean from the trial. Do you know what happened? Suddenly, Rauf denktash walked into the court room and withdrew all charges against him. Denktash was a (crown) government lawyer at the time. I believe the minutes of this trial have never seen the light.

Another EOKA member that switched sides, Onisiphoros Konteatis, supported that Yiorgadjis was behind the assassination of Yiannakis Stephanides (an EOKA member that was respected a great deal).

It is also rumoured that the whereabouts of Grigoris Afxentiou, a legendary fighter of EOKA, was given away by EOKA members and the Brits did everything in their power to kill him rather than take him alive. He knew too much, it seems.

Article 173 of the Cyprus Constitution provided for separate municipalities for Turkish Cypriots in the five main towns. The Greek Cypriots refused to obey this mandatory provision and in order to encourage them to do so the Turkish Cypriots said they would not vote for some of the Government's taxation proposals. The Greek Cypriots remained intransigent, so the Turkish Cypriots took the matter to the Supreme Constitutional Court of Cyprus. The court comprised one Greek Cypriot judge, one Turkish Cypriot judge, and a neutral President.

In February 1963 Archbishop Makarios declared on behalf of the Greek Cypriots that if the Court ruled against them they would ignore it[115] On 25 April 1963 the Court did rule against them[116] and they did ignore it. The President of the Court (a German citizen) resigned and the rule of law in Cyprus collapsed.

In November 1963 the Greek Cypriots went further, and demanded the abolition of eight of the basic articles which had been included in the 1960 Agreement for the protection of the Turkish Cypriots. The aim was to reduce the Turkish Cypriot people to the status of a mere minority, wholly subject to the control of the Greek Cypriots, pending their ultimate expulsion from the island. The Greek Cypriots had prepared a written plan for this purpose, called the Akritas Plan.

Glafcos Clerides, later the Greek Cypriot President, wrote his memoirs, entitled "Cyprus—My Deposition" in four volumes, published by Alithia publishing company, Nicosia, 1989-91. In these memoirs he admits that there was no need for constitutional amendments. According to him, "Makarios, at the head of the bi-communal state of Cyprus, had decided to proceed, stage by stage, to the unilateral abrogation of the rights granted to the Turkish community by the Zurich and London Agreements and to reduce its political status to a minority, using prematurely, the excuse of the unworkability of certain provisions of the constitution."

Clerides continued: "If the Turkish Cypriots resist "unilateral amendments of the Constitution" where their rights would be abrogated, the forces of the Minister of Interior will use force to "put down the uprising". Lt General George Karayiannis (the mainland Greek Army Officer then in command of the Cyprus Army) told Ethnikos Kiryx, an Athens Daily, on 13 June 1965 that "President Makarios decided (a) to proceed to organise the Greek Cypriots for battle and arm them, and (b) to proceed with the revision of the Constitution, including the cancellation of the [Turkish Cypriot] Vice-President's Veto."

"When the Turkish Cypriots objected to the amendment of the constitution Makarios put his plan into effect, and the Greek Cypriot attack began in December 1963"—(Lt Gen Karayiannis)[117] The General is referring to the "Akritas" plan, which was the blueprint for the annihilation of the Turkish Cypriots and the annexation of the island to Greece.
