It was a dignified opposition movement that was only later forced to resort to arms, initially in the form of the Syrian Free Army, in response to the regime's disproportionate response. Sadly, all sorts of lunatics and psychopaths were armed by extremists in the Gulf States, and Assad let a lot of psychopaths out of his jails to go and join them, leading to the tragedy we see today. I agree Tim, unfortunately the stage has already been set, who kills who.
Democracy is not compatible with the prevailent culture anywhere in the ME, its time that the west realizes that the only "functional " governace is unfortunately dictadorial.
We now see Libya facing civil war, Yemen, S.Soudan and other nations.
Provided they do not pose a threat to the western world or its interests they should be left to their own devices. Cultural and religious constrains nourished over more than 1000 years will determine their future.
