There were no nation states then. No Greece, no Italy. There were people that spoke Greek and their loyalties rested with their towns. They fought each other hard and furiously and their wars were not called civil then. They were the order of the day.

Towns?

Do you mean City-states?

They had to start somewhere. Do you think countries just appear out of thin air?

Ooopps silly me! Of course you do ....

Don't be too harsh, Linichka. He slipped into the gene pool when the lifeguard was on a break. Luckily for Paphiti, it was the shallow end.

There were many Greek City States in Greece which formed alliances and fought each other too. Only the Olympic Ideal united all Hellenic brothers at any one time.

Cyprus was part of that world as well. Hellenised, but separate as were Greek City States.

Aside from implementing a temporary noble ploy, which might benefit Cyprus' re-unification, selling out on your proven historical links is far worse as an insult Malapapa. Just be careful that you don't cross the line by disrespecting many generations of your very own ancestors! The shame will be all yours then.

So, the idea of nation-state started from the notion of city-state. Very interesting indeed. Okay, now predict how the thing will evolve, if you are still an evolutionist.

Another mistake unschooled proponents of the Theory of Evolution make is that somehow evolution can be predicted. Or, that evolution follows a known historical, tried-and-tested path; or even that it has no limits.

Why did the dinosaurs go extinct? They were too large to be sustainable under a compromised environment, of course.

On the other hand, why have crocodiles remained unchanged for millions of years? Well, they reached their optimum.

So too with the societies of mankind. There is a maximum comfortable size for friendship circles, a larger maximum for wider social cohesion (~200) which includes the blacksmiths, teachers, and medics etc needed for oiling the wheels and then I'm sure Steiner, Malthus, Keynes etc created some theories about population/economic/demographic dynamics which set the limits for efficient functionality of towns, city-states, alliances, countries, unions etc etc etc.

But, (as a non-economist/non-politician) I'll wager Turkey is our next dinosaur! :D

How did Australia evolve from Colonies to one single nation?

The similarities are strikingly similar since nation, by its very meaning is a group of people that perceive a real or imagined common history!
