How are we supposed to have a united country with different category of citizens? There should be one and only CYPRIOT. We should stop using the extensions in front of our nationality. Even the government forms have boxes to tick for GC/TC and OTHER. How backwards is that? You're either a Cypriot or your not. Even greater problem is religion. To "GCs" anyone who is not of Greek Orthodox religion is a foreigner or a none Christian. It's about time we denounce the church with any political involvment and live united as ONE CYPRIOT regardless of religion, colour or background and we will be the envy of any nation.

Bravo Kafene. :D

Just watch out because the Slavic c*&t is now going to call you a "coward".

Not really, given the overall Cypriot population ratios.

Likewise, I suspect people who think Cyprus is Greek... are Greek.

Democracy was a fine invention...

Are they not Sri Lankans rather than Indians?

Actually, the Vietnamese now seem to be gradually replacing the Sri Lankans.

Do these 'welfare carers' return to their native countries after their contract ends? Or do many 'overstay' by marrying a 'Cypriot'. (not necessarily meaning Greek Cyp)/

Some of them are marrying and staying.

...add to that the Viet.....an interesting concoction. :? Many Viets are Chinese origin. So the Chinese are making early inroads for 'World Domination'.  (My neighbour who died last week was a Chinese/Vietnamese).

Some of these South Asian young women who work as live-in housemaids learn very good authentic Cypriot Greek. I remember last year going to the local Co-op and hearing a young Vietnamese housemaid converse with the woman on the checkout. So good was her command of the local vernacular that a crowd of people gathered round to listen, with smiling approving faces.

My shrink is Vietnamese. I have many Vietnamese friends. They are fantastic people. They work like mavroi and are very polite. How do you know if a Vietnamese guy has broken into your house? Your maths homework is done and your dog is missing.

Same with the Sri-Lankans I met in Anglissidhes. They were carers and living in a TC house. They understood English and helped me find some old 'friends' I was looking for. They seemed well versant in GC vernacular. To say I was pleasantly shocked is an understatement.

I did not like their grafitti though.

Apparently it says '****************** lives here.'

That used to be Zino's house (in Anglissidhes). I used to wrestle with him.

It's a very interesting situation; if a non-EU national resides and works here for more than 5 (I think) years, they have a right of Residency, under EU legislation. So, Visas ar never issued for more than that period; I accompanied a Sri Lankan friend to the Immigration office in Lefkosia and was told quite openly, no Right of Residency would be granted irrespective of EU Law.

Most return to Cyprus under new identiites/passports; I imagine the majority are here on 'second' passports. Visa can also be obtained on 'Refugee' status - a nonsense given the end of the Civil War, last year - and even before that.

My friend, speaks a little Arabic, her native Sinhala, good English and passable oral Greek - even though she has never had a greek speaking employer.

Oi! That writing is probably in Hindi. It certainly is neither Singhalese (whose script I can read a little) nor Tamil (which I have seen written).
