EU SUPPORTS THE OPENING OF YESILIRMAK CROSSING

The European Union has expressed support to the opening of the Yesilirmak crossing point.

The EU says it sees the opening of a new crossing point as an important step forward to build confidence between the two peoples of Cyprus.

The EU Enlargement Commissioner Stefan Fule, who marked at opening ceremony for the construction of the first stage of the road to be used along the Yesilirmak crossing point, welcomed the development and said the opening of a new crossing point on the Green Line will offer new opportunities for the daily lives of the peoples of Cyprus.

The EU is contributing to the road construction with 2.5 million Euros, saved from the EU Aid Programme for the Turkish Cypriots.

It is the largest contributor to the project which is worth 5 million Euros in total.

Halil,

Sorry but i am 50 years old but, forgive me, i do not know any place in Cyprus named Yesilirmak, pls recheck the possibility You to have mixed up the countries-is that place in East Turkey? or in Cyprus?

Places change their names as time goes by.
Leningrad became St. Petersburg.
Saigon became Ho Chi Minh City.
Peking became Beijing.
Stalingrad became Volgograd.
Rhodesia became Zimbabwe.
Water under the bridge, old lad. Water under the bridge.

Leningrad was St. Petersburg, so what goes around comes around!

Many countries have different names for places, each different from the original.
Italy is a classic example:
Livorno in English is Leghorn (where the F did that come from?)
Firenza is Florence (eh?)
Napoli is Naples (close)
Venezia is Venice (hmmm)

Sometimes it's historical
Malvinas is Falklands.

But hey!, what's in a name?

You change the names you take the identity and history away. That is wrong.
