PC from United Kingdom – I sincerely wish your thoughts could come true but I have been studying the history of Cyprus for many years and am strongly of the opinion that Ankara has no intentions of withdrawing 40,000 troops and 180,000 illegal settlers.
Despite international condemnation and the violation of certain United Nations resolutions Turkey just does as she pleases. In fact she had done so in concert with Britain and America for many years.
There can never be peace in Cyprus because it does not suite the military objectives of Turkey, America and Britain.
The hatred that exists between the GC’s and the TC’s was manifested a long time ago. History will show you that the British Foreign Office has been scheming, plotting, and conniving for many years to retain a foothold in Cyprus.
In 1947 the British created a plan for a limited degree of self-government in Cyprus, which naturally was rejected by the Greek Cypriots.
In 1954 the Greek Cypriots quite rightly rejected further British proposals for a limited self-rule.
By 1955 Britain could see that her hold in Cyprus was slipping through her fingers so she convened a conference between Greece and Turkey in London.
The British Foreign Office had devised a plan to promote hostilities between the Greek and Turkish Cypriots, play one against the other, divide and then conquer.
The first step was to bestow a feeling of rights on Turkey so that in the future Turkey could be used to force the Athens and the Greek Cypriots to toe the British line.
This was all very important for the British particularly during the period in office of Prime Minister Harold Macmillan.
In 1957 when he became Prime Minister he had four issues before him: Ireland, Cyprus, relations with the United States after Suez; the economy.
This was the year Macmillan agreed with America that in return for guided missiles Britain would give the Americans bases in the United Kingdom that included the use of facilities in Cyprus. This too was the beginning of Britain's nuclear defence policy.
The British and American relationship has continued to this day, just take a look at Britain’s involvement in Afghanistan and Iraq.
Whether Talat wins or loses the final decisions as to the liberation of Northern Cyprus will be made in Ankara. As long as London and Washington continue to support
Turkey’s current stand nothing will change. Turkey has had many an opportunity to demonstrate a genuine desire to solve the problem by making the correct movements.
Turkey is good at giving undertakings to do things and then break her word. Anybody in his or her right mind will never trust a single word that comes out of Ankara or for that matter London or Washington. Turkey by her deeds over many years has demonstrated her true intentions.
I verily believe that we will not see in our life a positive change and fair solutions to old problems. As time goes on it just becomes harder.
Unfortunately the break up of Cyprus into two was planned by London, Washington and Ankara in the case of many long before they were born.
We are dealing with forces that are too hard to reverse.
A book worth reading is “The Cyprus Conspiracy : America, Espionage and the Turkish Invasion” - By Brendan O'Malley and Ian Craig.
