laptop question

No its not sounding funny. It sounds normal...usually when I first switch it on it makes a small hum, the loading screen comes on, then the fans would usually kick in and you could hear the hard drive etc etc, but now all I hear is the system running but its not "acting" or sounding like its preparing to boot up.

You still think its the hard drive? How could that happen though!? One day I switched it on in the morning, it loaded fine, entered my password and went to make my coffee....when I got back the screen was blank! And that was it.... :?

T_C, follow the simple instructions here to remove the hard disk and see if it works without it. BIOS messages should come up that end with a “no boot device found”…

You only need these two steps:

Remove the two screws on "HD #1"

then...

...then turn the laptop over, plug the power in and turn it on.

Ok, now open the memory hatch. If there are TWO memory modules remove one of them and fire it up again. If only ONE module remove it.

Carefully observe any change in behavior.

NB: Remove power cord before operating each time.

Leave the HD out and remove one memory module and then turn it on.

Well these are the only parts (and the battery) a user has easy access to and everything else is hard to get into and so requires a tech.

Your most likely culprit is your Heat Spreader that can stop dissipating heat and the processor just switches off. It’ll only cost $40-60 to get a new one but you need to get into the MB to change it!

Yeah it could be that because it would get so hot it would just shut down as if I'd held my finger on the power button....

Oh well, thanks for the help! :)
