Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul delivered a speech marking the 31st anniversary of the 1974 Cyprus Peace Operation, saying that Akara would never foresake the Turkish republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) for Turkey's EU bid.
Gul called the operation a "turning point" for the Turkish Cypriots' fight for freedom. “The world saw the stance of the Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots for a resolution during last year’s referendums,” he said. “Greek Cypriots rejected the UN Cyprus plan, while Turkish Cypriots voted for it.”
Gul also stated that Greek Cypriots would pay a price for this rejection. “They will pay a price if the TRNC’s isolation ends,” said Gul, adding that Ankara would stand by the TRNC in its economic development and growth. “The development and welfare of the TRNC is one of our priorities,” he added.
