TRNC PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION COUNTDOWN

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

Did you mean to say 'put a stop to' this?

Because it is no use asking for 'none of' something that has ALREADY happened (and is continuing to happen) on a very wide scale is it?

It's been happening for many years. Perhaps if more GCs had protested more loudly about it from the beginning, more 'prospective' foreign purchasers (because it isn't just Brits - though it does seem to be mainly Brits I agree) would have been 'scared off' and it would never have reached the proportions it has now.

The Orams losing their last appeal certainly had a dramatic effect on the property market in the TRNC.

Just as this latest ECHR ruling seems to have given them the 'green light' again.

It's said that the issue of property is being left to last with the two leaders in the talks. Yet it seems to be the most IMPORTANT and most DIFFICULT one for them to get agreement on.

It certainly cannot be dismissed or dealt with by just saying 'none of this selling off our houses'.

Even if they stopped right now (and they show no signs of doing that), there would have to be a mutually acceptable decision come to about what is going to happen about not just the GC houses that have been sold off, but all the thousands and thousands of new builds that have sprung up on GC owned land where there were previously NO houses.

That is probably why they left it to last,Gasman...
I believe that if politics is left out of it,it shouldn't be too difficult to come to an agreement which will satisfy most of the people involved...For example, those people who want to return to live in their old homes should be given their homes back as a priority...You will find that after so many years most people would prefer to stay put...They should be offered appropriate compensation for their properties...With a bit of good will and common sense the property issue could be resolved without too much difficulty...It is percieved to be difficult simply because people think in political terms...Both sides are trying to score points off each other...All we need is to establish some simple priorities and guidelines as I mentioned above, and the rest will fall into place...But in Cyprus there is little goodwill, and common sense is not very common...That is the real problem... :(

On the ballot paper, Eroglu is followed by Mustafa Kemal Tümkan, Arif Salih Kırdağ, Mehmet Ali Talat, Zeki Beşiktepeli, Ayhan Kaymak and Tahsin Ertugruloğlu.

Meanwhile, the order of propaganda speeches to be delivered by the presidential candidates on BRT has also been determined.

The first speaker is Ayhan Kaymak, who will be followed by Mustafa Kemal Tümkan, Mehmet Ali Talat, Zeki Beşiktepeli, Tahsin Ertugruloğlu, Derviş Eroğlu and Arif Salih Kırdağ.

Mean while political parties annouced which candidate they will support.

DP, MAP and His party will support Eroğlu..... TDP,ÖRP and YKP will support the Talat.

UBP APPLIES TO YSK

The National Unity Party has complained to the High Electoral Council that independent candidate Mehmet Ali Talat has violated election restrictions. An application was made to the Council by the UBP General secretary Irsen Kucuk who said that Mehmet Ali Talat violated the restrictions by attending the foundation laying ceremony in Yesilirmak.

In the application made, it has been stated that Talat organized a foundation laying ceremony marking the beginning of infrastructure work for a crossing point which is planned to be opened in the Yesilirmak Region and/or attended the ceremony with the title `the President`.

It said that Talat also delivered a speech at the ceremony, issued verbal and written statements to the press and that these statements and speeches were used for propaganda purposes.

It noted that the official state cars of the Presidential Palace were used for the ceremony and that all bureaucrats working at the Presidential Palace were present at the ceremony, adding that all these are in violation of the Election and Referendum Law.

Talat trailing in latest polls

AN OPINION poll published in the north yesterday placed nationalist Dervis Eroglu in a 15-point lead over incumbent Mehmet Ali Talat.

Appearing in ultra-right daily Volkan, the poll of “800 registered voters” put Eroglu on 45.9 per cent over moderate Talat’s 30.5 per cent, the biggest disparity shown by any poll published so far. Redborder, the market research company that carried out the poll, said its findings were based on face-to-face interviews conducted between March 14 and 21.

Polls have so far been few and far between in the lead-up to the April 18 ‘presidential’ election in the north. However, a source close to the UBP yesterday told the Cyprus Mail of three other recently conducted polls, yet to be published by those who had commissioned them.

One of these, the source said, was carried out by KADEM, a market research and trends company that is generally regarded as the most reliable source of such information in the north. According to its poll, which the source said was conducted on March 21, just over 50 per cent of the electorate would vote for Eroglu, with 40 per cent of the vote going to Talat.

The Cyprus Mail tried but failed to contact KADEM head Muharrem Faiz for confirmation yesterday.

Another poll, according to our source, was carried out by sending mobile phone text messages sent to 47,000 subscribers. Just over 10,000 responses were recorded, 41 per cent of which were recorded in favour of Eroglu, as opposed to 28 per cent for Talat. Twenty three per cent were said to be undecided.

Another poll put Eroglu on just over 58 per cent, with Talat trailing with 37 per cent.
