Jailed Briton says fake euros came from his granny

Postby paliometoxo » Sun Mar 21, 2010 1:34 am

A BRITISH tourist has been jailed for ten months after being caught trying to spend forged Euro notes.
Carl Redden, a Market Trader from Birmingham, was holidaying with his fiancée, Suzanne Wilson last summer when he was caught with five forged €50 notes.
According to UK media reports, Redden went into a kiosk to buy lunch just hours after proposing to Wilson. He unwittingly handed over the forged note to the kiosk owner, who called the police as soon as he had scanned it.
Wilson told the Daily Mail "Carl explained that he didn't know the note was fake and I gave him on of my €20 notes to pay. The manager told us not to leave because the police had been called."
"They arrived and Carl was immediately handcuffed. They asked if we had any more money. They examined the notes in our room and we were stunned when we discovered all Carl's cash was fake."
The couple were allegedly strip searched remanded in custody for four days while they waited for Wilson's mother to arrive with €10,000 in bail money. She then paid a €6,000 surety to allow the couple to return to the UK ahead of October's trial.
Over the following months, Wilson's family spent GBP32,000 pounds in legal fees, accommodation and car hire. Her mother told the Daily Mail "We have had to re-mortgage our house to pay for it. My husband Alan is a stonemason and he is working flat out so that we can pay our bills".
In court Redden pleaded guilty, allegedly following advice from his lawyer that he would receive a suspended sentence. Wilson maintains that he received the notes from his grandmother, aged 69, who was conned into buying the notes.
She had gone to a post office to change money for her grandson, where she alleges two "well dressed" strangers approached her and offered to exchange €250 for GBP250. She accepted, thinking the notes were genuine.
“Carl is an honest hard working man. He has never been in trouble with the police. He has never even had a parking ticket and is totally innocent. His Gran was conned by a plausible couple and she is as upset as we are.' Wilson said.
Wilson is now pregnant, meaning Redden will likely be in Nicosia prison when his child is born.
