Cyprus SBAs obsolete - Yanks in charge

Postby georgios100 » Sat Mar 20, 2010 6:23 pm

The Americans are in charge when it comes to "safeguarding" the planet. The Brits must dismantle their remaining bases, including the SBAs in Cyprus, as I declare these bases oblolete, out dated and an insult to Cyprus' sovereignty.

Here is a brief summary of the current world dominance by the USA:

With more than 2,500,000 U.S. personnel serving across the planet and military bases spread across each continent, it's time to face up to the fact that the American democracy has spawned a global empire.

Once upon a time, you could trace the spread of imperialism by counting up colonies. America's version of the colony is the military base; and by following the changing politics of global basing, one can learn much about our ever more all-encompassing imperial "footprint" and the militarism that grows with it.

The total of America's military bases in other people's countries in 2005, according to official sources, was 737. In reality, this number is much higher and in some cases, kept secret.

Interestingly enough, the thirty-eight large and medium-sized American facilities spread around the globe in 2005 - mostly air and naval bases for our bombers and fleets - almost exactly equals Britain's thirty-six naval bases and army garrisons at its imperial zenith in 1898.
The Roman Empire at its height in 117 AD required thirty-seven major bases to police its realm from Britannia to Egypt, from Hispania to Armenia

The worldwide total of U.S. military personnel in 2005, including those based domestically, was 1,840,062 supported by an additional 473,306 Defense Department civil service employees and 203,328 local hires. Its overseas bases, according to the Pentagon, contained 32,327 barracks, hangars, hospitals, and other buildings, which it owns, and 16,527 more that it leased.
The size of these holdings was recorded in the inventory as covering 687,347 acres overseas and 29,819,492 acres worldwide, making the Pentagon easily one of the world's largest landlords.

The people of Cyprus demand an immediate withdraw of the 3,500 British SBA personnel and the return of these "occupied" lands to the RoC.

The Yanks are not interested in more bases. They have many others in the region, much closer to "the objects of interest", and, of course, much more sophisticated than the crappy antennas & radars of the SBAs.

The Brits should realize, when a new supermarket opens for business, small butcher shops in the area have no choice but to close shop and go home.

As a Greek Cypriot I can understand the feelings toward the American military. However having served in the US military, I can tell you that for as many negatives the American military has been involved in, the positives are much more. They have saved many countries asses over the years by direct and indirect actions. Just having a US military presence keeps the peace and prevents war. The fact that the US has bases all over the world has a lot to do with history. The US has saved the world for aggressors all over the world like Europe and Asia. They aren't just going to back up and leave, that would only cause more problems and when violence does break out the US will have to spend time and money to mobilize. The US is also always the first and sometimes only nation to respond to disasters and major emergencies around the world. Some of the bases provide thousands of jobs to the local population. I can speak for experience the men and women in the US military don't give a shit about colonizing anything. The US military has a lot of internal issues but they are by far the most powerful and professional military in the world. Before we start pointing the finger take a look at the other military's they are far far worse. I was stationed in Turkey for a long time and I can tell you that the US supports Turkey for political and strategic reasons. The US military has no love for the TAF at all. The US build their military but they refuse to acknowledge it. They are unprofessional and completely lack depth in their leadership and rank and file. They would never be able to win a war outright.

My point exactly, thank you.

The American can do the job of monitoring the situation, especially in the near region. I am sure the US army can collect much more intelligence and can react faster and more effectively than a few Brits stationed in Cyprus.

What is the point of having the SBAs in Cyprus since the US can handle just about anything in the area? It is a waste of UK taxpayers money. I can't think of any other reason the Brits are still here except... saving face of the Ex-British empire, which expired a looooong time ago.

The American base on the north would never allow an "Attilas" operation to take place again. The Brits did allowed, 2 Attilas, to advance, forgeting they were the guarantor power. The only thing they guarantied was to keep their SBAs after 1974, regardless of the war being fought right in front of their eyes. A clear violation of the 1960 treaties.

The SBAs must be removed. They are useless, out dated, under funded, poorly equipped and powerless. UK citizens, as Cypriots did, should protest in favor of the removal of these relics which occupy a precious 3% of Cypriot land.

My original post is the removal of the SBAs. Once the Americans realize the Brits are gone, they might follow suit. Afterall, the TCs invited the yanks on the north, they can remove it themselves, RoC has no jurisdiction up there while the solution is not reached.

I don't see you protesting against the American base, are you?
