I've just read through 7 pages here and still don't understand where I put the plug in a friggin windmill the cable would need to be miles long!!

(is it me being thick again??)

That is the other problem...

The put the things miles from anywhere, the extension lead to run them costs fortunes...

Like those electric cars... :x

It's not that difficult to understand.
The turbines on Paphos are grid-connect. This means, the electrical power produced by these turbines comes directly to your home within miliseconds... your tea kettle is heated by the wind you see outside your window... Get it?

You can forget about every house having a wind mill on the roof. It's not practical or efficient. Everyone will "feed" from the wind farm, miles away from you.

The electric cars are on the road now. Some of them are circulating in Athens, Greece as we speak. The estimated charge overnight is approx 2 Euros of electricity which equals to approx 120 kms of driving. These efficiencies are getting better due to new battery designs.

This is not a joke. look it up. Don't make fun of this... it's the future.

apc2010, is this a real question?

Electric cars use electricity produced by many ways, including wind power.
The part you are missing is this: Electric cars don't use petrol, that's why these cars don't have a gas tank but a battery bank, get it?

Not sure if Toronto is second in nuclear power. People here have been protesting for many years about the dismantling of nuclear plants located very close to the city. I hear there are plans to relocate these plants many miles away in the near future.

Yes, this is a big one. I am not happy this plant is practically in my back yard. Many residents are furious about it. On the other hand, Toronto and the surrounding suburbs are some 6 million people plus the industrial sector. The electricity demand is Hugh. If an accident would happen here, no one would live to tell the story... it's crazy but true.

Electric cars require a massive amount of batteries which are envromentally harmfull to manufacture, discard or recycle. If you are recharging an electric car with fossil fuel ,mile for mile no better overall

The batteries are a problem, perhaps recycle might be acceptable. If renewable "hydro" was more available then mile for mile would make more sense. Still, conventional cars are made via fossil fuels and burn fossil fuels to move us around. Electric cars "burn" electricity, reducing their footprint and provide cleaner air for us to breath. It's a start. We are beginning to do something about carbon emissions and pollution. We have a long way to go. Electric cars will lead the way to better and "greener" solutions. It's better than nothing.

The future propulsion 'fuel' for vehicles will be:

Hybrids > Range Extenders (Electric with a small petrol engine which solely generate elecricity > Fuel Cell (probably hydrogen).

The speed of technology development will determine how quickly these changes come about.
