Cyprus has had the ability to look into producing alternative forms of power, wave power for instance for years, but we lag behind the rest with highly polluting power stations that make us one of the most polluting countries in the EU.
Yes the houses being built are sub standard in their construction regarding energy conservation, but the technology to save energy has been available for years so why no movement on it?
Cyprus has earth tremors on a regular basis - where could you guarentee the site of a power station or the storage facilities required for hundreds of years for the waste material.
the average cypriot produces more waste than an american citizen, yet unlike other countries we havnt built a single plant for burning any waste to produce power.
There are no large scale composting units or the active implementation of home units via the government to compost green waste.
Its the future generations of Cypriots and how their lives will be that should be the agenda. and what sort of a life our descisions leave them to inherit.
plus there are two other problems here - the midset of Cypriots.
And the vested interests of those who want the status quo to stay as it is.

I agree with you...

The money wasted on the wind farm would have been much better spent insulating houses or building an incinerator...

Plus the €10M that the EU has fined us for pollution would have been better spent the same way... instead it has gone to Brussels to be spent by greedy, unelected bureaucrats...

Proper insulation now has to be installed in all properties that had planning permission approved after 1st January I think last year, but it could have been this year.

Some developers have been installing this for years, I know of one in Nicosia who has done it for at least 10.

There is only one house I know of in Pissouri that is properly insulated...

There is an Interlink house about 200m from mine that was finished last week - no insulation...

There is another property just up the road from me that started building with cavity wall insulation but they got bored halfway up the walls and reverted to plain bricks!

Perhaps steel framed houses are the answer, easier to insulate.

http://www.elysianfieldsproperties.com/ ... v-concrete

I have never understood why rusty steel wire/rods wrapped in concrete has ever been accepted as a durable building practice. The ancient Greeks used to wrap iron reinforcing bars in lead to avoid corrosion.

Green scamming is my particular specialty of investigative journalism. The scam pervades the whole "green machine" from the setting up of NGOs to the installation of these wind turbines to CO2 trading schemes. The whole deal is rotten and the exceptions are very few.

For a proper renewable scheme to make sense there must be some means of storing energy. Usually this is a two level dam and water is pumped during peak times and used during wind lulls or at night (in the case of photovoltaics), which means MORE tax money to build a complex hydroelectric storage facility.

And how about the assholes that were so concerned about Cypriots eating ambelopoulia? Are they protesting because these flailing turbine tips kill t housands of birds? The University of Dublin reports a MILLIION dead birds annually due to wind turbines.

The money is not all coming from Brussels. Cypriots will have to foot the bill for the so called "feed in tarrif" where the electricity from these white elephants will be bought at 3 times the regular price. And what checks are in place to ensure that there is no connection from the regular electricity to the feed in meters? In Spain recently it was discovered that solar arrays were producing electricity at 1 and 2 AM. The cunning opeorators connected regular current, bought at 16 cents, to the grid where they received 45 cents!!!! The perfect feeback loop!!!!

Green fraud comes to Cyprus. Enjoy it. Makes you feel so green and righteous.

Re green scams. Has anyone seen the charter of incorporation of Greenpeace, WWF, Friend of the Earth, or any other major green group?

They do not post their articles of association on their sites nor do they inform the public where these might be seen.

Does anyone know how the board members of any of these organizatin are chosen? In any other corporate body the members, ie shareholders, vote the board members. Not in these organizations. Their inner workings are a mystery.

How do they choose their campaign objectives? Naturally there are no general meetings where the borad membership discuss their concerns and ask the board to plan campaigns etc. Who then decides that any issue, ie global warming, is the primary campaign (and EXPENDITURE) objective?

It is interesting to note that the Greek chapters of these organizations have thousands of paid up members but the right to vote is limited to less than a dozen people in each case.

Green? Possibly, Democratic? Are you kidding?

I will have a nother little rant.

American physicit and ecologist Amory Lovins said a long time ago that renewable power sources make sense when they are diffuse and empowering. Installing PV panels on every house makes sense, since it does ot affect the environment, uses pre existing infrastructure and above all EMPOWERS all citizens to produce their power in a decentralised system..

Note how the current schemes are capital intensive, centralised, big money operations that if anything reduce the chances of the citizen participating in power generation. And some people believe these schemes to be "green"!!
