How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

Where would the "Green line" be if the bases had not been here in 1974?

You are talking 36 years ago my friend... I like to look ahead, not behind.

Shall I hazard a guess and say that it would be to their south, at the risk of upsetting sum of my GC friends.

The economy issue... Hmmm

Just think, 92 square kms of prime oceanfront real estate, what's your price tag on that? Do the math... the figure is astronomical! Not to mention the construction frenzy to develop, the jobs created, infrastructure projects, marinas, parks etc.

You have obviously not set foot inside the bases, the infrastuture is superior to the rest of the island, cinemas, bowling alleys, sports pitches even a polo pitch.Schools, pavements!!!!,stables, shops ,hospital .I dont see more room for investment>

I went thru the bases many times... yes there are some buildings that could be put in good use, I agree. There is also a great deal of vacant land which is suitable for residential and commercial use, lovely "private" beaches and potential hotel/lodge site accommodations. More room can be found if the garrisons and weapons/ammunition depots are demolished for other appropriate uses of the land they occupy.

I am not a city planner but I do see great potential if the SBAs are given back. Having an extra 92 SQ kms does not hurt, does it?

Have you been to down town Nicosia or Limassol? The bases are a combination of Cotswolds/Baghdad, Our 2 large cities are on a different level both in infrastructure, sports, streets, malls, hospitals etc.....

Ask some tc's that actually spend time in the govt controlled area.

I drove past BG (called Berengaria camp many years ago) last month, it is in Polemedia, and was disgusted that it has just been mothballed. The buildings were always crap, the only saving grace was the olympic sized pool, but surely the British could release this retained site to the ROC? There are doubtless similar setups at the other end of the island.

Currently many MOD sites in GB are allowed to go the same way, reasonable buildings allowed to fall into disrepair until they are of no use to anyone.

Thanks for the info Smiler Brian,

MOD is facing budget cuts, time to let go of some sites. A 100 mil contract for Dhekelia is postponed due to high expenditures, officials are having another look at it...

I fail to see how holding on to unused resources can be defended by the UK government. High time they realised that Britain is no longer a "superpower", face facts - we are not even a player.

Maybe the EU could bring some pressure upon them?
