However, many Scots argue that the bases could carry on as conventional military depots, especially in a free Scotland with its own defence forces. So how many Cypriots work on the SBAs and would the NG or some other body take them over? And what if Cyprus is demilitarised?

There is only a few hundred Cypriot workers in the bases.
The Acrotiri base would be an excellent environmental area, a national park with beautiful wetlands... all sorts of uses are available.

So basically there wouldn't be much internal pressure or backlash against getting rid of the bases?

None whatsoever. Just last week the workers were on strike claiming the Brits cheated on labor agreements again... this is a disgrace happening in the year 2010!

“British Military Bases in Cyprus - An obstacle for peace in Cyprus and in the Middle East”.

The bases territory is 92 square miles and taking into account the size of the island, the British bases in Cyprus are one of the biggest in the world. According to the Agreements the British have the right to use the airports, the roads, the ports and the airspace of the Cyprus Republic.
And not only this! The British military bases in Cyprus are the only ones in the world which claim to be sovereign, the only ones which refuse to pay rent to the country "hosting" them and one of the few for which no time limit for their abolition is provided for. Even on matters where the Zurich-London agreements provide concrete terms as regards to the mission to the bases, the British very often violate them.

RoC has not received a penny for rent since 1964. The amount of rent accumulated is estimated at over 1 billion Euro. It's obvious, these violations rent the agreements null & void... the Brits dropped the ball since 1964, that's 46 years ago. RoC should kick them out ASAP.

Personally I really do not think Cyprus will put pressure on the Uk and USA, and you do not know what is agreed behind closed doors.

The pressure must come from us, members of CF. We can expose this injustice all over the world thru the internet. We can mobilize all the Cypriot communities across this planet to concur with us and file a global complaint against the SBA.

I am already talking the the Cypriot community president here in Toronto. He is willing to contact all it's members and start collecting signatures. The same should be done in Australia, UK, USA and so on. We should contact the Cypriot student associations here and abroad to organize demonstrations.

In Greece, after many demonstrations, the US bases are gone except one in Crete.

It can be done.

The reason why Greece was allowed to withdraw was because of Turkey. No matter what you do or say, the Brits will remain in Cyprus so long as USA want's them there. Harold Wilson wanted to get out of Cyprus when he as PM and was instructed to stay put as the bases were needed.
