"White Turf" St. Moritz.!

Postby Kikapu » Sun Mar 14, 2010 4:17 pm

I have once again attended this year's international event that takes place in exclusive town of St. Moritz, Switzerland every year in February, for three Sundays. It is a horse race on skies, trotting, and horseback on a frozen lake. This year's events were held on February 7th, 14th & 21st. The first two events I did not go, since it was very cold, below 10°C-15°C, but luckily, on the 21st, we had a "heatwave" of sorts. It was between minus 5°C to 0°C. Perhaps it was always minus 5°C and that it was the "Glühwein" (hot red wine with special herbs) that made it to feel like it was 0°C. White Turf is where a lot of very rich come during these events, specially the women to see and to be seen in their fur coats. It is a lot of fun and took a lot of pictures with my pocket digital camera. Enjoy.!

I’ve never seen horse racing in snow before… it looks spectacular around the bends!

Ridiculous Cypriot questions follow… 8)

1. How come the horseshoe sign isn’t written in Austrian/German but English? :?

2. Should I assume that you’re an alpine boy? :D

3. Should I assume that you smoke the famous St Moritz menthols? :?

4. What’s the chance of the ice giving way and the horses falling through into the lake… has this ever happened? :?

5. Are the temperatures you mention in Fahrenheit? Image

1.It is an international event where a lot of the riders and horses come from abroad. Besides, English is widely spoken in Switzerland.

2. No, I'm not an Alpine boy.

3. No, I've never smoked in my life, apart from couple of joints (literally) over 30 years ago.!

4. I'm sure the Swiss engineers are very capable of knowing how thick the ice is and how much weight it can support. Everything you see eye level, the stands, tents, people, and more (I'll add more pictures to show you what else) are all on the frozen lake. I do not recall ever the ice giving way.

5. No. °C for Centigrade.!

Why not, FD.??

Every year in February on three Sundays this event takes place. Look on-line for the exact dates if you are planning of visiting Switzerland during February, and if you do, then include this event in your itinerary.

To get into the event, it costs very little. About 10 Euros, if you do it standing. Grand Stands costs about 30 Euros. There 6 races and are about 30 minutes apart, so you have time to see one race and then walk around to do some people watching and then go and stand at a different location to see the next race. As the case is in Switzerland, in such events you do not get ripped off buying food or drinks just because you are a "captive audience". No, you pay about the same if you were in town for the same items.

Drive by car from Zurich is about 3 hours. Best to take the train like most people, which takes about 3 1/2 hours. You can bring a backpack to carry drinks and sandwiches if you like for the whole day as well as enjoy Bratwurst & Beer in the event. Again, you will not get ripped off.

Enjoy your stay in Switzerland.!

I was always under the impression, that a horse always has at least one foot on the ground when galloping, but obviously that is not the case with the picture below..

Also, can anyone guess what this diamond ring may be worth. The number of stones on this ring is enough to give people retina damage if one is not wearing sunglasses.!
