Testing Windows 7 on an old computer system…

OS to be installed: Windows 7 Ultimate edition/32bit version

Major hardware:

CPU: AMD Sempron 64 3600+ (1.75Gz)
HDD: 75GB
System Memory: 1GB
GPU: Nvidia GeForce FX 5200
MB: Unknown Taiwanese crap.

Results:

Installation duration: About 30 minutes (Clean install)

Performance: Very good

Hardware detection/Driver simulation: Rubbish! To trick Windows 7 to use your XP drivers for “undetected” devices just do it from SAFE mode!

Overall observations: It works fine but the speed is just a bit slower than XP. Appearance wise, Windows 7 looks crap compared to Vista but works much faster/better. All driver issues can be fixed using trick above.

Regards, GR.

Yeah she'll be alright... if you save her docs, pics, vids, music, favorites, etc first.

The trick is to fix your network driver FIRST if needed, via safe mode to secure Internet connection and then reboot and get Win7 to search for drivers for everything else for you on the net! After that, anything still not sorted out can be fixed via safe mode.

And yes, Win7 feels very robust and it should prove to be very popular in time.

NB: The 64bit version is ok for 64bit processors so it’s unrelated to memory.

yes i have all the drivers needed saved on usb now incase i format and need drivers especially the wireless one...

oh yes then comes using a whole 16GB usb to save pics..etc that part will take longer then installing windows lol

i had the RC version of 7 for maybe a year i hardly ever used it but i am so used to 7 now i would never switch back to vista or xp now. it corrected vista mistake or Svista as my friend would say. the extras like being able to hold your mouse along the bottom wothotu having to click to and from pages and the new task bar which is very similar to mac osx the way it works now and the recording program i forget what its called but you set it to record you and it takes step by step pictures. im sure you know all this and more but this is things i like about 7. and its not so bloated vista ultimate i was not happy with 4GB of ram with it, though it did not help i have a slow processor lol..

i was told that a 32bit version of windows cannot use up 4GB or more of ram and that a major reason to use the 64bit os's is if you have 4GB or more as 32bit systems dont use it , though it will show 4GB in the my computer it does not use it.. i guess that was wrong info .

Palio, it’s all to do with the processor’s MEMORY ADDRESSING capability and built-in instruction set. Here’s a comparison between an 8bit and 16bit processor in assembly language…

Example: Move the contents of the AX register into the BX register…

Mov AX, BX (8bit register addressing)
Mov dAX dBX (16bit memory addressing – the “d” means double word)

A 32bit pocessor CAN access 4gigs but the OS will only let you use the first 3 gigs of memory because the 4rth is reserved for hardware devices etc.

I run it on my laptop (1Gbyte - 32-nit) and my desktop (4Gbyte - 64-bit) and have found it to be stable and a good performer...

Also, add a flash drive and configure it for ReadyBoost - makes a huge difference to disc performance.
