NICOSIA -- House President Marios Garoyan has expressed the hope that Turkey’s crimes in Cyprus will be recognized just as the Armenian Genocide is being recognised.
Asked to comment on a resolution of Swedish parliament recognising the 1915 Armenian Genocide by the Ottomans, Garoyan said that some people try to brush under the carpet the crime that took place against Cyprus in 1974.
He said he had been briefed about the discussions on the matter at the Swedish parliament by the country’s ambassador here.
“One more country shows the way. Genocide can no longer be overlooked and Turkey has to recognise it,” he remarked, saying that these crimes cannot be discounted, nor can the genocide be considered an accidental event that took place many decades ago.
Turkey, he pointed out, is accountable to the international community with regard to such crimes.
“I want to send a clear message. The Armenian genocide is gradually being recognized. I hope that Turkey’s crimes in Cyprus will also be recognized because since 1974 some are trying to discount Ankara’s crime on the island and this cannot be accepted,” he stressed.
