British bases must go - EU standards violated.

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

Perhaps he implies that without the Brits, Cyprus would be 50 years behind civilization as some parts of Turkey still are to this day.- EVER BEEN TO SOME OF THE QUIETER VILLAGES HERE .... EVER BEEN TO TURKEY ??

If the Brits cleared off totally from Cyprus in 1960 and the 1974 war never happened, Cyprus standard of living would have been much higher than any country in Europe. - NOW YOU ARE JUST BEING FUNNY
The Brits were an obstacle not aid in Cyprus development. I know of a dozen countries that did very well without any Brits around.- MORE WELL BALANCED , JUSTIFIED OBSERVATIONS THERE
MAYBE YOU SHOULD ASK A FEW "DEVELOPERS" ABOUT THAT ONE AS WELL OR ASK THE
BANKS AND GOVERNMENT ABOUT THE BILLIONS THAT THE ACCURSED BRITS HAVE BROUGHT TO CYPRUS

Go ahead DT, give this guy some more of the same medicine, he needs it.

George what you say makes total sense except that when you step on a snake it tends to bite you. The bases are there for a purpose that suits the yanks. It really is not that easy to just remove them, not while oil flows in the arab lands. When that is finished then they will no longer be needed and then we'll have em back.

My dear friend YFred,

Both the Yanks & Brits acquired better located bases in Iraq, Kuweit, Saudi Arabia, etc to control the oil flow, thank you very much.

The SBAs are no longer a must keep. I see an opening to get rid of them while the solution is in the works. Do you see it?

Georgios100

The bases in the all the Arab lands are very unsafe, it can blow up in their faces any time. The safest bases are Cyprus and Turkey. Unfortunately we are stuck with the yanks as they have so much military and economic power. It is a practical option. It was the threat that Makarios posed to the yanks that led to 74. Makarios was flirting with Moscow, not even mentioned removal of bases and see what they did.
As we speak, the best thing we can hope for is a peace agreement and help the TC economy to get to a reasonable healthy state otherwise they will always be under the Turkish/American fist.

You're the one who wants all their settlers to stay and for their troops to keep intervening. Are you sure you don't enjoy a good Turkish fisting?

Again in their self interest, there is less need for the size of the bases, and a need to reduce costs ties in well with the offer to give up one of them.
When stacking priorities, this is low down. Whether they stay or go not a biggie to me. Would help those that are land hungry so grease the wheels to a solution.
I like Brits, they gave us baked beans and the fry-up too.

Mal how many times do we have to say this so it actually registers. While Turkey feeds us how do we say get lost? What do you take us for.
The word fist was used just to add extra effect. What are you truning into Bumbo/B25 all of a sudden.
Let the TC economy breath and then you will see which way they swing.
GR better watch out.

I think everyone agrees this thread is not going to happen unless the uk or usa decide they want to leave. There are many more important things to sort out first.

Fair enough. But why do you want all the settlers to stay after Turkey stops feeding you? And Turkey's army to come back whenever it wants after Turkey stops feeding you?

Same here.

Show us you'll swing in the right direction by stop making unreasonable demands.

As I said earlier in this thread it reminds me of monty python, watch the film life of brian,it was a quote. But george if you feel so strongly move back HERE (cyprus) and do something about it....

FIrst things first,

ROads: Cyprus has a modern network of 4 and 6 lane highways connecting its major cities and towns. None of the roads left behind by the British have been used for the past 25 years. Unless you consider the one direction road in Kaimakli...then you've got me there.
Irrigation: ThThe island wide irrigation system with the connection of the Notios agogos which connects the island's water system was built by the government of Cyprus:
Education: Public schooling in Cyprus follows the Greek System you numptee. The English School and Grammar School follow the British and the American Academy follows the Kenyan one.
Sanitation: Now I know you don't know what you're talking about. We can have 6 pages just devoted to sanitation in the 50's if you like.
