British bases must go - EU standards violated.

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

Quote from Cyprus Mail

"The truth is that Britain has no need to use any devious plans to secure the continuing presence of the bases on Cyprus soil, because it has already secured this right through Cyprus’ EU accession protocol of 2003. The protocol clearly states that the rights and obligations of the parties to the Treaty of Establishment of 1960 would not be affected by Cyprus’ accession to the EU.

It was signed by the President of the Republic and unanimously approved by the House of Representatives, with the votes of DIKO and EDEK, as well as by the legislatures of all EU member-states at the time.

Was Omirou, a deputy at the time, not aware that he had voted in favour of the indefinite presence of the bases in Cyprus? Was neither DIKO nor Phileleftheros aware of the protocol? Was it ever likely that Britain would have agreed to Cyprus’ accession to the EU, without safeguarding its right to maintain the sovereign base territory indefinitely? The Treaty cannot even be challenged, as it has been incorporated in the accession protocol"

So it would appear that whether you ever get the SBAs, in part or in full, is up to the UK to decide not the RoC to demand.

Get used to it and get over it.

The only reason this hasn't happened so far is purely politics and tit for tat with the UK.

Serious question here how do you change a constitution?

EVer heard of amendments being voted in parliament?

Just asking Dt dont know much about it! so can any ammendments at all be made as long as they are voted in by parliament?

It's only a slap in the face if the IPC puts the interests of Turkey first, ahead of innocent victims of its aggression. If it acts in the same way as the ECHR would - as the ECHR expects it to act - then what's the problem? Are you suggesting the IPC won't act fairly?

That is not what I am saying so stop trying to twsit things into how you see them.

It is what you're saying. If the IPC were replacing the ECHR as a fairer, speedier local remedy you'd be moaning about it, not gloating that it was a 'slap in the face' of displaced Cypriots. Justice is what refugees want. They don't care who delivers it.

Viewpoint wrote:You have been told to go to the IPC for internal remedy like hundreds of other GCs who have gotten restitution or compensation. This is what you did not want thats why its a slap in your face now do you get it?

It's true refugees didn't want the IPC. And the reason is because people like you see the establishment of the IPC as a slap in their face, rather than a means for them to gain the justice they deserve.

I know mate, wasn't being hostile, just came out wrong.

Here's an example of how US amendments to the constitution are made.

To Propose Amendments

•Two-thirds of both houses of Congress vote to propose an amendment, or

•Two-thirds of the state legislatures ask Congress to call a national convention to propose amendments. (This method has never been used.)

To Ratify Amendments

•Three-fourths of the state legislatures approve it, or

•Ratifying conventions in three-fourths of the states approve it. This method has been used only once -- to ratify the 21st Amendment -- repealing Prohibition.

The Supreme Court has stated that ratification must be within "some reasonable time after the proposal." Beginning with the 18th amendment, it has been customary for Congress to set a definite period for ratification. In the case of the 18th, 20th, 21st, and 22nd amendments, the period set was 7 years, but there has been no determination as to just how long a "reasonable time" might extend.

Of the thousands of proposals that have been made to amend the Constitution, only 33 obtained the necessary two-thirds vote in Congress. Of those 33, only 27 amendments (including the Bill of Rights) have been ratified.

problem with any amendments in Cyprus, is the TCs spit out the dummy, withdraw from government and call in the murderous turkish army to kill thousands of GCs for attempting usch amendments and then go on to rape ethnically cleanse them usurpting the land as they go.

And then you have the ilk of karakiozi, DTA, Fjocks, Venomous person et al all pretending to be angels of no wrong doing and it is the evil GCs that are at fault.

Just ask yourself this, who came to whos island and who killed whom? Then you have the answer to the Cyprus problem. the scummy turks are the cyprus problem.

So you and your mates can all go F yourselves, Cyprus doesn't need you nor want you.

game over.

Oh and you can take your cheapskate carpetbaggers with you when you go.

GCs are a peaceful people, who have just been shat upon by turkey and the British over the years. We are not guilty of anything, we only ever tried to defend ourselves from maraulding criminal gangs like you.

Piss off.

Because you are invaders and trespassers and don't belong in Cyprus. The day we rid Cyprus of you is the day peace loving GCs can get on with their lives.

You can try to change your constitution all you like, but what you can't change is Cyprus’ EU accession protocol of 2003. The protocol clearly states that the rights and obligations of the parties to the Treaty of Establishment of 1960 would not be affected by Cyprus’ accession to the EU. It's not the Treaty of Establishment of 1960 that is in question, but the rights and obligations of it. The Treaty cannot even be challenged, as it has been incorporated in the accession protocol. You effectively signed away the chance to change this part of your constitution when you joined the EU.
