'Opportunities Lost'

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

Have heard it said many times that, but for the (erroneous) assumption that RoC would agree to the Annan Plan, they would not now be in the EU. And that it was a huge blunder to have allowed them in while the island was still divided.

Cyprus formally applied for accession to the European Communities in 1990, and in 1993 the European Union (officially created in 1992) considered Cyprus eligible for membership. In the statement endorsing Cyprus’ membership in the EU, the organizing stated:

Cyprus’ geographical position, the deep-lying bonds which, for two thousand years, have located the island at the very font of European culture and civilization, the intensity of the European influence apparent in the values shared by the people of Cyprus and in the conduct of the cultural, political and social life of its citizens, the wealth of its contacts of every kind with the Community, all these confer on Cyprus, beyond all doubt, its European identify and character and confirm its vocation to belong to the Community.
In 1997, the initiation for the final stages of negotiations on Cyprus’ entry into the EU began. It was announced that the EU would send a special envoy to Cyprus to monitor UN efforts there to achieve a political settlement; it was hoped that the presence of a European Union representative would further entice the Greeks and Turks to settle. Initially, it was stated that the membership of Cyprus into the EU could only take place after a political settlement had been reached. Negotiations between Greek and Turkish Cypriots were taking place; on this basis the EU announced that negotiations on Cyprus joining the EU could continue.

It was hoped that representatives of the "Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus" would take part in negotiations on Cyprus’ membership in the EU; again, many felt that the EU pressure could help bring about a political settlement on the island. However, the EU finally announced that if no political settlement could be reached that final negotiations on entry of Cyprus into the EU would take place only with the Government of the Republic of Cyprus, since this was the only authority recognized by international law (note that Turkey was the only country that has recognized the "Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus").

As we can see there were no pre-requisites that the Annan plan should be accepted for Cyprus to be accepted in the EU

No pre - requisites for a solution to be found before acceptance into the EU

Cyprus was accepted because it met all the criteria for joining the EU

Cyprus blagged its way into the EU with the connivance of Greece.

So you have never, ever, heard it said that the EU made a blunder admitting Cyprus before they resolved the 'problem'?

In case I am alone in having heard this, I have just googled it.

Lots of results (I will ignore those from any sources that will be rubbished as being 'Turkish') - here is a quite recent one of them from 'The Economist' - I said I used to hear this in London, this article says:

It is equally common to hear in Brussels that the European Union made a terrible mistake in admitting Cyprus as a full member in 2004, but as a divided island

http://www.economist.com/blogs/charlemagne/2009/09/tough_love_for_cyprus

So, obviously, it is not just me that has heard this! I am not passing judgement on whether it is justified or not, I was just repeating what I had heard back then.

A blog where the author writes about "hearing" things in Brussels? Not very official is it?

I have also heard some say that certain EU member states were happy to have Cyprus admitted with the island divided as it provided the perfect tool to 'block Turkey' with the RoC veto. Again, I couldn't possibly comment on whether that is true - but I can tell you I have heard it said. I am not bloody making it up!

Well if you want to live in denial that these things are 'said' and are 'heard' regarding Cyprus, so be it.

I didn't say it was 'very official'. I originally said I 'had heard it said many times' in London, before moving here. I posted the link to prove to you that I am not the only one who has heard that - and obviously not just in London!

But you keep your blinkers on if you prefer. I am just reading another article from a Political Trends site, where it states that the 'EU diplomats concede their mistake in admitting the RoC as a member state before the island’s reunification'.

If I can find out WHERE they admitted it - I will be sure to let you know so you can rubbish that idea too lol!

take it easy mate. I'm just saying that officiaLly nothing like this has ever come out. I have also heard many times from a 2 former school buddies that work at the EU commission the feelings of some EU technocrats regarding turkey. They are downright racist against anything Turkish and these are not GC's. Should we give them the same weight we give the hearsay you've come up with?

How long after 1974 was it before anything came out 'officially' re the US supporting the Turkish Intervention? I know older GCs who still did not believe that could possibly be true as recently as about 4 yrs ago!

Most people these days can make up their minds to some extent about what they believe to be the case without having to wait for GOVERNMENTS and Official Bodies to admit stuff!

I've also heard that US, nor UK nor Russia want to alienate Turkey (not just because of Tehran, but also re future Trade possibilities) - I don't have an official document from any of those Govts to prove that. But I don't find it impossible to believe that there is a certain amount of truth in that.
