That is how polls are done. But care must be taken so that a good cross section of the population are selected. eg: you can stand outside a pub and ask 800 people whether the pub should be closed down.

Polls are a good representaion if they are done correctly and adjusted accordingly depending on the conditions on the ground. The actual sample size does matter and larger the better but although 800 seems on the low side, it still gives a good indication.
