The weather has affected some venues. Combined with the 'no smoking' stuff. People don't mind sitting outside to smoke when the evenings are balmy. They usually prefer to do so.
But in the sort of weather we've had recently ... well!
I was in a very big restaurant on saturday. No smoking. At the beginning of the evening, those who wanted to smoke were congregating outside the doors to 'have a fag'. As the evening wore on, and it started raining and got colder (and the guests had imbibed more alcohol) more and more of them were just lighting up.
I was quite horrified to see they were just flicking the ash and stubbing out the ciggies on the floor. I thought it would be more sensible if the management just put ashtrays out on the tables.
By about 1am NO ONE went outside to smoke. And on every table people were smoking and there were hundreds of people in there.
I was told that if they stopped them smoking, once they'd had a few drinks, if they couldn't smoke, they'd go home. Not that it bothered me. Just mildly bemused that they upheld the no smoking at the beginning of the night and ditched it later on.
