One born every day?

Postby cymart » Mon Mar 01, 2010 9:19 pm

A number of years ago,an elderly English widower, who has since died, bought a ticket from my wifes travel agency here in Paphos to go to Amsterdam to meet some Nigerians who sent him a letter with a dubious business proposal on similar lines to this one.Needless to say, once they led him outside the terminal building they robbed him, pushed him to the ground and broke his glasses-almost blind without them,he narrowly avoided being run over by the car of a KLM ground hostess who was ending her shift, who helped him and called the police and the British Embassy!!My wife still feels somewhat guilty for even selling him the ticket to go there in the first place, although it was around 10 years ago when these scams were not very well known and he seemed quite convinced then it was all quite above board.
But yet,as has been rightly said, people still fall for them even after all the bad publicity!!
As a general rule,if you never bought a raffle ticket you cannot have won a prize and who would send an e-mail to inform you that you had won millions anyway? There are loads of other scams too ,including fake e-mails from your bank asking you to conform your account details, and even apparently written on their official paper....beware!!Real banks NEVER send e-mails about this!

This was going on well before the internet appeared. the first time I saw the Nigerian 419 scam was around 1984.

If you want a good laugh, see what people do to get the scammers back at http://419eater.com/

They are usually 'Doctors' or 'Professors' from somewhere like the Keith Chegwin University Lagos!

The scam is as old as the hills now. But of course people still fall for it. If they didn't, they wouldn't still bother sending out the emails.
